I am having difficulty connecting a used Compaq LJ650 printer to my Dell Inspirion 1100 laptop using the USB connection which came with the printer. WinXP does not seem to find the new hardware.

A printer, every printer, needs to have it's own specific driver (a piece of software) installed for Windows to recognise it. This should be on a CD that is supplied with every new printer. Without the driver the printer cannot work in Windows. If you didn't get a driver CD with it you may find one on Compaq/HP website.
