Hi,

When I search google from my google toolbar on firefox I get normal google results. When I click on a link however it redirects to different sites. Not long after I start getting bombarded with Vista Internet Security junk. It's crippling my ability to use the internet.

My DDS log as follows:

Hello Jeff smile.gif Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Please keep in mind that we have a large backlog of users just like yourself waiting to be helped so try to be as timely as possible in your replies. Since we do this on a part-time voluntary basis we are limited on how many logs we can respond to and keep open due to time restraints. If you have to be away or can't answer for some other reason just let me know. Thank you for your understanding.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Run RKill right before you run ComboFix.

RKill by Grinler
Link #1
Link #2
Link #3
Link #4
  • Download Link #1.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click the RKill desktop icon.
If you are using Vista please right click and run as Admin!
  • A black screen will briefly flash indicating a successful run.
  • If this does not occur please delete that application and download Link #2.
  • Continue process until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links tell me about it.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Instruction can be found HERE
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: Please post the log in the reply window and do not make it an attachment. Do this with all subsequent replies unless I ask otherwise.

Thanks,

thewall

Hi,

Thanks for responding. Since this is my work computer and my boss was breathing down my neck to do something, I had identified my problem as primarily the "XP Smart Security 2010" problem. I found a fix online, deleted the appropriate registry entries (I have experience with that kind of thing) and ran Malwarebytes. This seemed to eliminate the basic problem but when I used my google toolbar search box I still got redirected. I also ran the TDSSKiller on the rootkit problem.

Of course not long after I did all of that I received your response. I went ahead and ran combofix and it appears to have done the trick on the google redirect problem.

The only other thing is that after running combofix my AVG antivirus no longer boots up on startup. Should I reinstall?

Here's the combofix log:

I'll include something in the script which may help the problem with AVG. After CF runs go ahead and reboot if CF doesn't then if you are still having problems with it we may have to do something else.

Special ComboFix script made for this computer only

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs including TeaTimer if you have it so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Instructions for doing so are located here

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusOverride"=dword:00000000
Driver::
gel90xne

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

If I have helped you then please consider donating so I can continue the fight against malware Posted Image

Hi,

I ran combofix again as directed. Just before I did I noticed that the redirect problem in google toolbar (firefox) was back.

Run GMER again for me just like you did the first time. I'm thinking we may still be dealing with an infected file here.

Hi,

When I got into work this morning and fired up my computer my intention was to run another GMER log for you. Before I could get started all hell broke loose on my desktop.

I got a windows security warning saying my anti-virus was turned off (I made sure it was on before I left last night) and started getting pop up's for not only XP Smart Security but also XP defender. I would kill the processes in windows task manager and try to start malwarebytes but instead of malwarebytes starting it would retrigger the XP Smart Security screens again. I have not been able to get malwarebytes or Spybot to start since. I even tried deleting the same registry entries that yesterday seemed to quell the action but before I could finish it would retrigger. The executable file is called ave.exe on the XP Smart Security. I have yet to identify the executable on the XP defender.

I then went into safe mode to start the GMER scan and the XP Smart Security junk started up even in safe mode.

This is the most insidious thing I've ever seen and I've dealt with some nasty infections in the past.

Anyway, GMER is currently scanning in safe mode and I'm working at another terminal. It took 2 or 3 hours before so I'll post it as soon as it's available.

Thanks,

Jeff

This may be something similar to what I had to take off of my step-daughter's laptop a couple of days ago. I spent the best part of 5 hours trying to remove it and was beginning to wonder for awhile if it was going to beat me. I finally got it but of course I had the machine right in front of me along with not having to use it for anything else at the time so that was a big help.

Let's see if GMER will return anything we can pinpoint and then we'll go from there.

O.K. so at some point it stopped the GMER scan. When I got back to my terminal there was no log and the program was frozen. Of course the bug had thrown up a whole bunch of windows on top of that.

Should I run the rkill and combofix just to see if it'll chill things out enough to get a gmer scan?

Let me know,

Thanks

Let's try the following first:

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v

  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Hi,

Here's the tdss log. It took longer than expected as the system hung up on shut down when it re-booted and I didn't want to screw anything up. Anyway, the log was there when I got the machine back up.

Thanks.

Good, looks like we got the bad guy. Next let's open your MalwareBytes, do an update and the run a Quick Scan. If it finds anything post the log, if not just let me know.
If I have helped you then please consider donating so I can continue the fight against malware Posted Image

Well, I still had the same problems after the reboot. Then I got mad.

The other process .exe that would pop up in windows task manager was something called Mdnsresponder.exe.
I killed the process and did a search for the file on my hard drive.
I found it hiding in a program file named Bonjour. In the same file was a .dll file called mdnsnsp.dll.
I deleted the .exe file and unregistered the .dll file. This seemed to calm things down a little.
I then went back and cleaned up the registry of the XP smart security 2010 stuff.
After doing that I could finally get malwarebytes to start and did a scan. It found some stuff that I had not seen before today.

After rebooting all appears normal.

I'm going to try firefox tomorrow morning. It's late and my wife is wondering what I'm up to!

Would it help to uninstall firefox and reinstall a fresh copy?

My Malwarebytes log follows:

Good job. Let's see if we can get a Kaspersky scan now:

It's important to run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. Please note: Kaspersky requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) be installed before scanning for malware, as ActiveX is no longer being used.)

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
  • Open the Kaspersky WebScanner
    page.
  • Click on the button on the main page.
  • The program will launch and fill in the Information section on the left.
  • Read the "Requirements and Limitations" then press the button.
  • The program will begin downloading the latest program and definition files. It may take a while so please be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the files have been downloaded, click on the ...button.
In the scan settings make sure the following are selected:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
By default the above items should already be checked.
    • Click the button, if you made any changes.
  • Now under the Scan section on the left:

    Select My Computer
  • The program will now start and scan your system. This will run for a while, be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • In the drop down box labeled Files of type change the type to Text file.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
You can refer to this animation by sundavis if needed.

If you cannot get that one to run then try E-SET:

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Hi,

I couldn't get the kapersky scan to work. it would start to scan then it would hang after a hour or so.

I'm currently trying the eset scanner and after an hour it's hanging at 23 %.

Should I start over? I've spent 4 hours trying to get this stuff to run.

It's my lunch break so I'm going to wait until I get back to see if it's still stuck in the same place.

So far so good as far as everything appearing to be gone. I just haven't tried my google toolbar search yet. Didn't want to touch it until all was clear.

Thanks,

Jeff
