Computer is running Windows XP SP3. It's my father's computer. He was having problems viewing webpages in Internet Explorer, so he was instructed to download Moxilla Firefox. Firefox will run - IE will not. I downloaded MBAM, but I can't get it to update. I get the following error message: "Error Code: 732 (12029,0).

I also downloaded and tried to install Dr. Web CureIt in Safe Mode. The download appears fine, but I get an error message when I try to install it - saying the format is unrecognized.

Where do I go from here?

Error Code: 732 (12029,0).

This error is referring to Malwarebytes not being able to access the internet. There is a possibility that Malwarebytes sees Internet Explorer as being set to "work offline". We need to change this. We also need to check your proxy settings.

First, Open Internet Explorer ( even if it won't connect to the internet ). In IE7 or IE8, you should see "Tools" in the upper right hand corner.

Click on Tools and look for "Work Offline". It should look like this:

Posted Image

If you have a blue check mark next to "Work Offline", please click on "Work Offline" until it resembles the picture.

Next, we're going to check your proxy settings.

Check your Proxy settings in Internet Explorer to make sure malware did not alter them. If so, that can affect your ability to browse or download tools required for disinfection:

* Open Internet Explorer > click Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab.
* Click the LAN Settings... button and uncheck Use a proxy server for your LAN
or change the settings to the proxy you normally use if you previously reconfigured it.
* Remove any unknown addresses from the Address box. 80 is the default Port so it does not have to be changed.
* Click Ok and then click Ok again.
* Close Internet Explorer and restart the computer.
* An example of how to do this with screenshots can be found in steps 3-7 under the section Automated Removal Instructions... in this guide..

Check your Proxy settings in Firefox to make sure malware did not alter them:

* Open Firefox, click Tools > Options > Advanced and click the Network Tab.
* Under the Connection section click on the Settings... button.
* Under Configure Proxies to Access the Internet, check No proxy. This is the default option if you don't use a proxy.
* Click Ok and then click OK again.
* Close Firefox and restart the computer.

For other browsers, please refer to How to configure browser proxy settings.

Please check to see if you can update Malwarebytes and run a scan. If you are still unable to update Malwarebytes, you can always go to another computer and use a thumb drive to download the updates. Once you have them on the thumb drive, take them to the infected computer and run the update from the thumb drive.

Manually download the Malwarebytes updates from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

Thanks for the response! IE started working again after resetting the proxy settings. I was then able to update MBAM and run a scan. Several infected items were discovered. Here's the log file:

That looks pretty good. Let's run SuperAntispyware and an online virus scan. Please post the logs when complete.

SAS, may take a long time to scan
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
  • First
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

Note.. SAS doesn't open the registry hives for other user accounts on the system, so scans should be done from each user account.

Please perform a scan with Eset Onlinescan (NOD32).
(Requires Internet Explorer to work. If given the option, choose "Quarantine" instead of delete.)
Vista Users be sure to run Internet Explorer as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.
  • You will see the Terms of Use. Tick the check-box in front of YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Now click Start.
  • You may receive an alert on the address bar that "This site might require the following ActiveX control...Click here to install...". Click on that alert and then Click Install ActiveX component.
  • A new window will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?" (OnlineScanner.cab)".
  • Answer Yes to install and download the ActiveX controls that allows the scan to run.
  • Click Start.(the Onlinescanner will now prepare itself for running on your pc)
  • To do a full-scan, check: "Remove found threats" and "Scan potentially unwanted applications"
  • Press Scan to start the online scan. (this could take some time to complete)
  • When the scan has finished, it will show a screen with two tabs "overview" and "details" and the option to get information or buy software. Just close the window.
  • Now click Start > Run... > type: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • The scan results will open in Notepad.
  • Copy and paste the log results in your next reply.
Note: Some online scanners will detect existing anti-virus software and refuse to cooperate. You may have to disable the real-time protection components of your existing anti-virus and try running the scan again. If you do this, remember to turn\ them back on after you are finished

I ran an ESET scan - 2 items were "identified and cleaned". However, I think you're instructions need to be updated. After the scan completed, I didn't get a screen with the two tabs identified - "overview" and "details". Then, when I tried to run the log - "Now click Start > Run... > type: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt" - I got an error message saying that the program couldn't be found. I found the log using Windows Explorer:

What's next? The computer seems to have a lot of hard drive activity while it's sitting at idle with only the desktop showing.

The computer still seems a bit off. For example, when shutting down or logging off, you have to hit "Start>Turn Off Computer>Turn Off" twice before Windows responds.

Perhaps we have a few corupted files that we may be able to straighten out.
Please run System File Checker sfc /scannow... For more information on this tool see How To Use Sfc.exe To Repair System Files

NOTE for Vista users..The command needs to be run from an elevated Command Prompt.
Click Start, type cmd into the Start/Search box,
right-click cmd.exe in the list above and select 'Run as Administrator'

You will need your operating system CD handy.

Open Windows Task Manager....by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC

Then click File.. then New Task(Run)

In the box that opens type sfc /scannow ......There is a space between c and /

Click OK
Let it run and insert the XP CD when asked.

They didn't bring their Windows XP installation disk with them on this trip, so running sfc will have to wait until they get home. Is there anything else I should run now, or are we at an impasse until the sfc can be run?
