This error message generally indicates that you are trying to read a file containing graphics or formatting with an incompatible programme. What is the extension of the file you are trying to open?

Wordpad should read .doc files but when you use Wordpad to open you may have to change the type of file it is going to read to "word for windows.doc" or "all files" in the selection box that opens when you click on "open a file" after you open Wordpad.

Unzip the files into a new file you create for it in your documents (or anywhere else you can find it) and then open Wordpad, navigate to that file and do the above.
