I have an old HP Deskjet 610C, in addition to a Dell printer. My software CD does not have drivers compatible with XP, so I got the drivers online. I can use the printer, but the HP Toolbox software does not work. It looks like it was installed (an icon was placed on the desktop, etc), but when I double-click on it, nothing happens. So, if I ever need to troubleshoot, do a cleaning, perform an alignment, I can't because the Toolbox will not open. I am assuming that this is an XP problem since I had this software on my old computer with Windows 98 and it worked just fine. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

melbb,

Did you try the program compatibility wizard to use the original HP Printer CD to get toolbox installed. Then use the PnP feature to have XP update the drivers to use the printer with XP? It's just a thought. One other question, are you able to do the toolbox functions, i.e. cleaning, check ink, etc. via Start>Programs>Hewlett Packard>HP Deskjet 610C>Toolbox?

I did not initially try the program compatibility wizard. I tried installing the software and it came up with several errors because of the incompatibile driver. I just told it to ignore the errors. Then I got online and tried to update the driver. My computer sat there for 20 minutes supposedly downloading the files. I got impatient because I didn't think driver software was that sophisticated! So I stopped it. The driver had not been installed. So I uninstalled the printer software, then installed the driver (which took less than a minute), then installed the other software. It doesn't work if you go into Start/Programs either. Per your suggestion, I ran the program compatibility wizard, and it still won't work. I don't know if it didn't install all of the components because of the driver issue or what. I don't know how to get around that if that is the problem.

Hmmm, with everything you have tried, I'm at a loss. The only thing I would suggest is possibly emailing HP and hope they might have an answer. Or someone else in the forum has an idea. Let us know if you do resolve the problem. Good Luck.
