Hey BC gurus smile.gif

This is a dELL laptop running Vista that belongs to a good friend. He complained that after a Google search, when he would click on one of the choices in the search results, it would send him to a different site that had nothing to do with the search request. It also will not allow me to go to this site, and will not update his McAfee, Spybot, Superantispyware, or Malwarebytes.

I have attached the DDS logs, but GMER "will not run" on his system. It locks up every time I attempt to run it. I have run Defogger to disable CD emulation.

I appreciate any help that you can provide.

Hello, and welcome.gif to the Malware Removal forum! My online alias is Blade Zephon, or Blade for short, and I will be assisting you with your malware issues!

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Before we begin cleaning your machine, I'd like to lay out some guidelines for us to follow while we are working together.
  • I will be assisting you with your malware issues. This may or may not resolve other problems you are having with your computer. If you are still having problems after your machine has been determined clean, I will be glad to direct you to the proper forum for assistance.
  • Even if things appear better, that does not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions until I give you the all clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that all the malware has been removed. If a piece of the infection is left, it can regenerate and reinfect your machine.
  • Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • I ask that you please refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. If you act independently it will cause changes to your system that I will not be aware of, which will make the process of cleaning the machine a much slower and more difficult process. Additionally, some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
  • Please perform all steps in the order received. If you are unsure or confused about any instructions I give you, you should ask me to clarify before doing anything. Additionally, if you run into any problems while carrying out instructions, you should STOP and reply back here explaining what happened.
  • After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed. If you need additional time, that is perfectly alright; you just need to let us know beforehand. smile.gif

***************************************************

Please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Will do. thumbup2.gif

I did forget to mention that initially I was able to download Spybot and SuperAntispyware; he already had Malwarebytes. However, none of them would update, but I ran Malwarebytes anyway. It found several files associated with malware called "Koobface", SAS found nothing, and I didn't run Spybot. I had Malwarebytes take care of what it found. Sorry I didn't mention this in my first post, I honestly forgot about it.

Best Regards,

Hi oneof4

Okay. . . thank you for letting me know. When you get your hands on the machine, please retrieve the log from Malwarebytes (can be accessed by clicking on the "Logs" tab within the MBAM interface) and paste it here.

Thanks,

~Blade

Hi oneof4 smile.gif

Great. . . let's begin.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to renamed.exe before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • VERY IMPORTANT: Disable all running antivirus, antimalware and firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. NOTE: This list is not all-inclusive. If yours is not listed and you do not know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Double click on renamed.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

~Blade

Hello oneof4

Alright good. . . next step.

1. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/305367/infected-with-google-redirect/

Collect::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\o6ko.sys

Driver::
o6ko

Netsvc::
netsvc6

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

2. Close any open browsers.

3. VERY IMPORTANT: Disable all running antivirus, antimalware and firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. NOTE: This list is not all-inclusive. If yours is not listed and you do not know how to disable it, please ask.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

~Blade

In your next reply, please include the following:
ComboFix Log
How is the computer running now?

OK, we have a bit of a problem.

Ever since this infection started, access to McAfee Security Center has not been allowed (When you try to access it, the Logo flashes, then you hear a "ding" sound, then nothing). I noticed during the initial run of ComboFix that the McAfee firewall started popping up asking for permission to make certain modifications; I allowed each one. But I still cannot get into the Main control center to turn McAfee off. I attempted to go into Task Manager and stop its services from running, but one of them gave me an "access denied" message. I then attempted to use Control Panel to un-install McAfee, but when I click on the Control Panel or most any of the Desktop Icons I get the message: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."
I attempted to install Revo Uninstaller from a flash drive, but it gives the same message wheather I attempt the install from the machines Desktop, or the flash drive itself.

Okay, nevermind. After posting the above, I ran a Google on the error message and stumbled upon this, it's the same issue and you delt with it by simply restarting the computer. Duh, it's amazing how hard it is to see the most simple of solutions sometimes. That fixed the program access issue, however McAfee still will not open its Control Center, should I go ahead and un-install it?

Hi oneof4

Yes. . . please go ahead and uninstall McAfee for the time being. However, since you'll then be operating without an Antivirus please keep the machine disconnected from the Internet except while performing any given instructions.

Hello smile.gif

Everything seems to be functioning properly. The redirects are gone. dance.gif I downloaded and installed AVG to replace his McAfee (he can switch back later if he so chooses). I installed and updated Spybot. I was able to update MBAM, and SAS. There were also 8 Windows Updates waiting to be installed, and they are installing fine as I write this.
Initially I was worried as the ComboFix log did not want to submit to the internet, but when I used the link it created in C drive, it worked fine.

Here is the ComboFix log:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 19.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u19-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

***************************************************

Your Adobe Reader is out of date. Please uninstall it through Add/Remove Programs and download the latest version from Adobe: Download
Please untick all proposed toolbars unless you really want them.

***************************************************
  • Click on Start>Run
  • Now type combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the "x" and "/".
  • You will then recieve a message letting you know that Combofix was uninstalled Successfully.
This will remove files/folders assoicated with combofix and uninstall it.

***************************************************

Your machine appears to be clean!

If you disabled emulation drivers earlier, you can re-enable them now if you wish:

To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

***************************************************

I highly recommend that you read through the below set of very helpful suggestions and implement them; they will help protect you from reinfection
I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site!
  • Lots of Hacking/Trojans use the methods found (plugged by the updates) that have not been stopped by people not updating.
  • By updating your machine, you have one less headache!
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • If you wish, you can also use automatic updates. This is a good thing to have if you want to be up-to-date all the time, but can also be a bit of an annoyance due to its handling and the sizes of the updates. If you wish to turn on automatic updates then you will find here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates.
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.
  • If you do not want to have automatic updates turned on, or are on dial-up, you can always download updates seperately at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

For a nice list of freeware programs in all categories, please have a look at this thread with freeware products that are regarded as useful by the users of this forum: Commonly Used Freeware Replacements.

Another recommendation, is to download HostsMan. It safeguards you with a regularly updated Hosts-file that blocks dangerous sites from opening. This adds another bit of safety while surfing the Internet. For installlation and setting up, follow these steps:
  1. Double-click the Downloaded installer and install the tool to a location of your choice
  2. Via the Startmenu, navigate to HostsMan and run the program.
    1. Click "Hosts" in the menu
    2. Click "Manage Updates" in the submenu
    3. Out of the three, select at least one of them (I have MVPS Host as my main one)
    4. Click "Add Update." After that you will only need to click on the following button to retrieve updates:
  3. Click the X to exit the program.
Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help and if there any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BC, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!

Hello Blade smile.gif

I have followed your instructions, and everything went well.

Thank you so much for your speedy & quality instructions. You certainly are an asset to the BC malware removal community. I am presently working through the malware training program, and if I ever get to the level of where you are now, then I will be very happy. Again, thank you so much!
