So my wife googled a phone number and clicked on a link that hosed her PC.

She got the explosion of web based ads and she shut the computer down, when she rebooted none of her applications will run. It gives the "Application Not Found" message.

I tried several things.

Of course her AVG 9.0 doesn't work (and obviously didn't block whatever this is)

I can NOT get to system restore (even in safe mode)

I can not load a new copy of avira in safe mode with networking (it starts to load and once loaded I get the "application not found" message)

USB ports don't work

The OS is Win XP home edition SP3, intel core 2, unmodified out of the box dell PC.

ANY SUGGESTIONS ?????

EDIT: Moved from XP Forum.

I fixed it

It wasn't a virus but I had to restore the default file association for .exe.

I downloaded the fix here
