I am having problems with updates on my computer and wonder if I have some malware.
Dell Dimension E310. Windows XP MCE Version 2002 Service Pack 3.
P4, 2.8 Ghz, 2GB Ram
14% free on C: 50 GB HD.
Internet Explorer 8 Version 8.0.6001.18702
Microsoft Update hangs with message:
Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating software for use with the website...

Was working before.

AVG also wont complete an update while was able to update and scan with Malwarebytes, Spybot S& D, and Adaware.

Many websites won't open a link unless opened in new tab or window.

Managed to get PCPITSTOP complete tests to run online.

Vista laptop works fine on wired connection to same ethernet switch.

Firefox can't be updated because apparrently stuck downloading V 3.5.8

I have tried using this as the only computer on my DSL network with no better luck.

Thanks,
Jim

Please post the results of your Malwarebytes Scan.

Sorry about the delayed response.
Was out of town.
I did manage to run SAS and clean up some cookies before getting your response.
Still have problem running Windows update.
Thanks,
Jim

This looks like it has been resolved.
AVG Free had Search Shield and and active Surf-Shield disabled. By enabling these, my problems with Internet Explorer and Firefox seem to have been resolved.
AVG free is now at 9.0.791 on my computer.
Thanks for the help.
Jim
