I would appreciate any help or insight concerning this log file. It belongs to a friend of mine, I am trying to help her out. I ran McAfee VirusScan and AOL Spyware. McAfee found a low level piece of Adware which I was probably bundled with some other software and inadvertently installed at one time. I cleaned that item. Other than that, nothing was found. Just hoping someone could check this out and let me know if there is anything bad that really needs to be addressed. For some reason the AOL software stopped working and had to be removed and reinstalled. Reinstall seems to have been completely successful.

Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

First:
Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed close the Ewido program.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Once in safe mode, start Ewido and do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report.txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

Reboot back to normal mode, open report.txt and post it as a reply to this post along with a new hijackthis log.

It is infected with the Home Search Assistant Cool Web Search parasite.

Hi Lawrence,
I appreciate your advice and instructions. I've been doing a few searches to try and learn a little bit about this trojan. Do you think Stinger will remove it? I want to try and help her by connecting to her computer with Remote Assistance. If she has to boot into Safe Mode, then I'm probably going to have to go to her house which is 1/2 hour away. I don't think Remote Assistance will run in Safe Mode.
I am sure you know how it is when you agree to "help" a friend and it turns into a black hole. I don't do this very often but this guy at work begged me because his wife was having a meltdown because her AOL wouldn't run. He didn't want to come home from work to a stressed out wife....well, I am sure you get the picture. Thank you so much for your help. Dona

Ahh i see your problem...you are going to need safe mode for this baby unfortunately unless you are very comfortable killing processes and working in the cmd line. Stinger prob wont be able to do it.
