Evening all,

Apologies, this is first post here, so am hoping we have enough info to start.

I have tried to complete a GMER scan, but whatever we have is not letting us finish it, have done most of the other scans, listed below, and will continue trying the gmer scan. UPDATE 21 MARCH GMER SCAN NOW ATTACHED

Essentially, there is obviously something amiss with our system, control panel will not open, windows updater says there are updates available but will not upload them, we operate on wireless broadband, the tray icon says not connected to any networks, but it is connected hence the post, have tried adaware scans, mcaffee, and have installed avast, and all scans pick up nothing, so whatever it is, I don;t think wants to be found! operate on Vista although have just received an upgrade disk to upgrade to new windows

GMER scan will not complete, but as mentioned, have run the others mentioned, and have also run hijack this (although when running this, it gives a message "for some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file) , all are listed below.

Any assistance or pointer in the right direction would be so much appreciated, as I really would love to know what has come through and how, and more importantly, how to fix matters....! If I can get a GMER to complete I will post this as well...

ANY held would preserve what little hair I have left, I will hopefully hear from someone soon! Have a good weekend all...

Hello, and welcome.gif to the Malware Removal forum! My online alias is Blade Zephon, or Blade for short, and I will be assisting you with your malware issues!

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Before we begin cleaning your machine, I'd like to lay out some guidelines for us to follow while we are working together.
  • I will be assisting you with your malware issues. This may or may not resolve other problems you are having with your computer. If you are still having problems after your machine has been determined clean, I will be glad to direct you to the proper forum for assistance.
  • Even if things appear better, that does not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions until I give you the all clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that all the malware has been removed. If a piece of the infection is left, it can regenerate and reinfect your machine.
  • Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • I ask that you please refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. If you act independently it will cause changes to your system that I will not be aware of, which will make the process of cleaning the machine a much slower and more difficult process. Additionally, some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
  • Please perform all steps in the order received. If you are unsure or confused about any instructions I give you, you should ask me to clarify before doing anything. Additionally, if you run into any problems while carrying out instructions, you should STOP and reply back here explaining what happened.
  • After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed. If you need additional time, that is perfectly alright; you just need to let us know beforehand. smile.gif

***************************************************

Please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Hi Blade, and thank you in advance for your help....

I have posted a New dss log below, essentially things started to go wrong a few weeks ago, we were getting blue screens and windows updater was saying that updates were available, but the computer would not open the updater screen. Control panel is also seemingly disabled, and does nothing if you try to open it.

The internet icon in the botton taskbar also says that the computer is not connected when you hover over it, but it obviously is connected.

Web pages will load, but very slowly, some freeze, and virtually no icons or pictures will come through either, for instance, on this page, on the writing options I get red x Bold red x Italic, red x Underline red x insert Link etc...

We run windows vista but have just been sent an update disk from acer to update to the latest windows, although if there are problems, loath to do anything with it just yet!

I have run adaware, avast and mcafee and they have found nothing, bar some cookies through adaware.

Any light you can shine on this would be VERY much appreciated!

Thanks you once again...
The Hamiltons.

Hello The Hamiltons

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

IMPORTANT!!! - when you save the file, rename it to something random, such as bubbles.exe This must be done before beginning the download!

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

For the scan, I downloaded the mbam software, called it something random, updated the program and then disconnected from the internet, turned off all of the anti virus and firewall, ran the scan then turned it all back on again before reconnecting to the internet.

The Hamiltons.

Hello The Hamiltons

Sorry for the delay in reply

I don't see evidence of malware infection on your machine so far. Let's see if we can get those updates running though.

Please try running Fix WU by Ramesh Kumar. On completion, please reboot your PC then try updating again.
