The computer is running windows xp professional. I have limited experience dealing with malware removal.
R-kill and Malwarebytes were used to remove xpdefender.

When the computer rebooted at the end of removing xpdefender the desktop was white with error message (Active Desktop Recovery), when Restore Active Desktop is clicked the error message (An error has occurred in the script on this page, line 65, char 1, error Object doesn’t support this action, code 0, URL: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/pbostwick/Application%20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.htt, do you want to continue running scripts on this page?), when you click yes, nothing happens.

All application are blocked from running, when an application in clicked, menu appears Open With, Choose the program you want to open this file with: Firefox.exe, programs, etc…. because of this blocking I can’t run any anti-malware software or do anything.

I tried to reboot in safe mode and my password was not recognized and would not boot. The computer does boot in normal mode and the password is recognized in the normal mode.

Explore is accessible, so I have access to all files on the computer, and double clicking on a file opens the appropriate program, are there any Malwarebytes files that can be double clicked to open the Malwarebytes program?

Is there a way to repair the desktop, open the computer in safe mode, and have windows recognize application files? If I could get into safe mode I could try to restore the original settings in Malwarebytes before the removal and start over again. Will it help if the computer is booted form a windows disk? The is always the option of reinstalling windows.

Please help

Hello, please try to download and run FixExe.reg

Let me know if that fixes the problem.

I am moving this topic to the Am I Infected forum.

regards, Elise
