Attempting to disinfect a co-workers computer. I know he had the rogue anti-spyware program Personal Security on the computer. The computer kept getting pop-ups about it being infected with spyware and suggesting to use Personal Security to fix the problem. I ran rkill (even renamed) and Malwarebytes both in normal and safe mode. It seems the only thing rkill stopped was itself and Malwarebytes found nothing. I could not update Malwarebytes. Any attempt at updating or downloading any legitimate anti-spyware or malware program was met with the redirecting of the browser to Stopzilla and Paretologic Anti-Virus Plus websites. I also loaded Ad Aware and Spybot by way of flash drive and ran them in Safe Mode. Neither found anything which did not surprise me. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hello sgtlmassie smile.gif Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Please keep in mind that we have a large backlog of users just like yourself waiting to be helped so try to be as timely as possible in your replies. Since we do this on a part-time voluntary basis we are limited on how many logs we can respond to and keep open due to time restraints. If you have to be away or can't answer for some other reason just let me know. Thank you for your understanding.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

For the time being I will proceed on the assumption you wish to clean up your computer. If you do not and would rather reformat or reinstall let me know in your next reply.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Instruction can be found HERE
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: Please post the log in the reply window and do not make it an attachment. Do this with all subsequent replies unless I ask otherwise.

Thanks,

thewall

I appreciate all your help thewall..as this is a co-workers computer reformatting is not an option. I have already lectured him on his lack of computer security. I shuddered when the first thing I saw was a limewire icon on his desktop. The Combofix log is below. Again, thanks for your help.

You're welcome, I am glad to be of help.

It's good you warned your friend about Limewire. P2P programs are often trouble looking for a place to happen.

Will you check with your friend on the following or just let me know. These ports like the one below are something we usually close unless the user doesn't want them to be. Maybe he has it open for a particular reason but it can be a source of problems too.

Although we still have some more to do give me a rundown on how the computer is running now that ComboFix has been run.
If I have helped you then please consider donating so I can continue the fight against malware Posted Image

The computer seems to be working just fine. No more redirecting of the browser, no pop ups and I was able to update malwarebytes. I have used ComboFix before but didn't even think about it this time. As for the port..this guy doesn't even know what a port is so I doubt he would know why it was open. I do have some cleaning up of his computer to do, but, will not until you give me the all clear.

OK then we will close it up with this script.

Special ComboFix script made for this computer only

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs including TeaTimer if you have it so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Instructions for doing so are located here

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
Collect::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsystemsecure.exe
Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"8085:TCP"=-
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"WinSecure"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

ok..a couple of unexpected issues. everything went fine until combofix started up. It advised me the antivirus program was still active even though I know for a fact it was and still is disabled. So I continued to run combofix. It then advised me there was a newer version of combofix available so I allowed it to download. It did so within the combofix window. After it fininshed scanning a pop up window came up advising "combofix needs to submit malware files for further analysis" and I had to click ok before it would go any further. Here is the log..hope it's not corrupted in any way.

The warning about the Antivirus happens sometimes depending on the AV. There are times when we have to have them uninstalled to get CF to run. There is still parts which are interfering with CF even after being disabled but since it went ahead and ran with no problems then that's OK. CF will check to see if there is a newer version and advise you it needs to update so that is normal. The pop-up you got was because I had the file in question uploaded so it could be added to the data bank and it was also deleted at the same time.

I believe we can run this last scan and if it looks alright we will be able to finish up.

It's important to run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. Please note: Kaspersky requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) be installed before scanning for malware, as ActiveX is no longer being used.)

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
  • Open the Kaspersky WebScanner
    page.
  • Click on the button on the main page.
  • The program will launch and fill in the Information section on the left.
  • Read the "Requirements and Limitations" then press the button.
  • The program will begin downloading the latest program and definition files. It may take a while so please be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the files have been downloaded, click on the ...button.
In the scan settings make sure the following are selected:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
By default the above items should already be checked.
    • Click the button, if you made any changes.
  • Now under the Scan section on the left:

    Select My Computer
  • The program will now start and scan your system. This will run for a while, be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • In the drop down box labeled Files of type change the type to Text file.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
You can refer to this animation by sundavis if needed.

ok..the procedure is slightly different then what you advise..it must have been updated. it automatically launches when you go to the website and checks that the computer mets the requirements. I clicked on the "accept" button and it started to download but I got a warning that "launch of the Java appplication is interrupted! Please establish an uninterrupted Internet connection for work with this program". I have turned off my other computers to insure they werent using bandwidth, I have checked to insure no other programs were running to cause interference..heck..I even turned off the firewall. I tried several times including reloading and even exiting the webpage. I knew it was going too smoothly..LOL. What do you suggest?

They do change around sometimes. I will have to run through it myself so I can alter my instructions.

Lets' try this one instead:

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Most of that would have been gone anyway on uninstalling ComboFix but it was better to let it take a look so we could be sure.

If the machine is still running good we should be able to clean off out tools and finish up.

The computer seems to be running just fine. The only odd thing I have noticed is every time I open IE it tells me it is not the default browser. so I click to make it the default browser. I keep getting that notification. there are no other browsers even loaded on this computer.

disregard the above. Not getting the notification anymore and double checked the settings. IE is listed as the default browser. Guess it was just a MS glitch. Ready to clean.

Good deal!! thumbup2.gif We'll finish up then.

Uninstall Combofix
  • Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard.
  • Now copy & paste the green bolded text in the run-box and click OK.

    ComboFix /Uninstall

<Notice the space between the "x" and "/".>

  • The following will implement some very important cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points.

Since we are through with DDS and GMER you can delete them from the Desktop now if you want to.

Here are some suggestions I have for helping keep the computer clean in the future. Some of them you may have already done or they may not be things you wish to do but it is a general list of things which can be helpful.
  1. Make sure you install all the security updates for Windows, Internet explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it to that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC
Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications
Note: The update process uses activex, so you will need to use internet explorer for it, and allow the activex control that it wants to install
  2. Keep your non-Microsoft applications updated as well
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities, to check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month
  3. Make Internet Explorer more secure
    Click Start > Run
    Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  4. Install SpywareBlaster & make sure to update it regularly
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster from here
  5. Finally, this is very important. It is absolutely essential to keep all of your security programs up to date

If you have any other questions or issues feel free to ask as I will be checking back on this topic.

Other than that if there is nothing else I can do for you then I wish you good luck in the future and thank you for using our forum. smile.gif

Great..thank you for your time and trouble. I will have another talk with my co-worker and try to impress upon him the importance of computer security again. it seems that is all i do at work..LOL. And you do recommend SpywareBlaster? I have used it before but never saw any benefit to it..i guess because it works in the background. I will load it on this computer. Again, Thanks for all your help. Have a great day. And I have to ask..your forum name "thewall" is it in reference to Pink Floyd or something more cryptic?
