My computer has been doing some stranger things lately. Unfortunately, I am memory impaired and really can't remember the details. I have run Spybot, Adaware and AVG, but there are still problems. I hope someone can help me.

Hi, grandpaw7,

Let's give things a good cleaning and see if that helps. Please print these instructions so you can refer to them.

Please download: CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html

Once installed, launch CCleaner:
Do not change any settings, except to make sure on the Options tab>Advanced "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" is NOT checked.
Click Run Cleaner (bottom right). When finished> Exit (top right) (reboot)

Please disable SpywareGuard and Microsoft AntiSpyware for now. Their features that monitor your Registry for bad changes can also prevent good changes and interfere with HJT.

SG
Right-click on the SG icon in your system tray and SpywareGuard should open.
Click "Options" and then uncheck these options under the "General" tab:
Enable Real-Time Scanning
Enable Download Protection
Enable Browser Hijack Protection
Click "Save Settings"
** When we have completed all of your fixes, please re-enable these settings.

MSAS:
1. Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray [It's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye.].
2. Click on "Security Agents Status".
3. Click on "Disable real-time protection".

Next right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray again to open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
1. Click on the Options menu and choose Settings.
2. In the left pane column click on "Real Time Protection".
3. Under Startup Options, uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents on startup (recommended)"
4. Under Real-time spyware threat protection, uncheck and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection" (recommended).
5. Click the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Finally, right-click on the MSAS icon in the system tray and select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware".
[After your system is fully cleaned reenable MSAS using the same steps but this time reverse them.]

Please launch HijackThis and tick these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Close all windows except HJT and click "Fix Checked".

Did you remove Norton Internet Security at one time? If so, did you use the vendor's instructions for removing it?
If you did not remove all remnants of the program before installing AVG, perhaps that might be contributing to your problems.

IF have you removed the Google Toolbar and MicrosoftMoney using Add/Remove Programs, check your Program Files to be sure those folders were deleted after you uninstalled those programs.
c:\Program Files\google <--folder
C:\Program Files\MicrosoftMoney <--folder

Reboot.

Please do an online virus scan with Panda ActiveScan Here. You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
  • A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • Please post that report in your next reply. Simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also, please include a fresh HJT log. Thanks!
Don't forget to enable SpywareGuard and MSAS again.

To Bugbatter: Embarrassed though I am by my procrastination, I finally geared myself up to take the steps you outlined. While the steps you outlined would probably seem quite simple to most people, even neophytes, my mental state is such that they did seem imposing and so I kept procrastinating. Unfortunately, the old age has done a job on both my memory and my mental dexterity.

But, as I so commonly find to be the case, when I do undertake such tasks which seem imposing on their face, doing them is even enjoyable. Such is the case with the steps you outlined.

I have finally geared myself and done them.

I already use cccleaner and have used it again.

I did disable Spyware Guard and MS Spyware, and re-enabled them afterwards.

I ticked and removed the listed hijack items and here is the new log:

I have not used Norton, but I have used and removed the Google Toolbar and MS Money, and have deleted the Program Files entries.

I rebooted and ran Panda and here are the results:

Hopefully, BugBatter, you will not take my procrastination as a lack of interest (rather than an overabundance of fear) and will provide his thoughts about where I stand now. That is what I hope for and in any event I'm grateful to you. When I consider how impossible it sometimes is to get support one has paid for, it borders on the miraculous how helpful people like you are willing to be just out of kindness.
