I'd really appreciate some help getting rid of a winfixer popup. I ran Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware using the tutorials recommended settings but it keeps coming back. This is the winfixer URL that keeps opening in a new browser window on my pc, (sometimes a gray popup box appears first)

http://www.winfixer.com/pages/scanner/inde...&ed=2&ex=1&ax=1

I知 using a HP Pavilion pc; OS is WinXP home edition with I.E. browser. I have AVG & ZA firewall & SpywareBlaster installed. I'm using Earthlink, (dialup), as my ISP and using Earthlink Mailbox.
I believe, with detailed instructions, I知 proficient enough to make changes to my Registry Keys, (if needed).

Thanks,
Rose

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

    VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:
    http://www.atribune.org/forums
    http://www.247fixes.com/forums
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum
    http://forums.net-integration.net

  • At this point press enter one time.

  • Next you will see:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\provisioning\cattask.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\provisioning\ksattac.*
This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items:

    O2 - BHO: ShopSafe Browser Helper Object - {333F6B96-3992-4D58-A499-145A10FE48C3} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\BhoSSafe.dll

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\provisioning\cattask.dll

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: cattask - C:\WINDOWS\provisioning\cattask.dll

    and click FIX CHECKED
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Appreciate your taking time to help me!!!

I encountered a couple of problems in following your instructions:

1. After running KillVundo.bat, the HJT log did not have this item listed, (O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\provisioning\cattask.dll), so I checked the other 4 items and clicked - Fix Checked.

2. I could not get the CleanUp program to download correctly. Kept receiving this error message: 的ncorrect size: c:\documents and settings\owner\desktop\cleanup40.exe. Actual size is 71826 bytes, but should be 31877bytes. Download the setup again.

I found this information on Steven Gould痴 website concerning the Cleanup download:

***If you are running Windows XP (any edition) and have Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, then your Internet settings may be preventing you from downloading it. This is because the installation program is an executable (".exe") program, and Windows XP Service Pack 2 changed the default security settings for Internet Explorer. You have several options:***

As instructed, I disabled ZA Firewall & AVG and downloaded the Cleanup Zip File, instead of using your link; upzipped it and the program worked fine.

3. ActiveScan presented it痴 own problems with not being able to d/l the Active X controls. (Another SP2 quirk?) I did manage to get them to d/l, (took forever) and ran the program scan.

Active Scan results:

Very well done

Please print out and/or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

****
Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

***
Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

***
start hijack this and put a check at the following lines

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.onelook.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://us10.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://us10.hpwis.com/

Now click Fix checked
And close hijack this

***
We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Now remove the following folder

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cache32dsrf4535dfs

***
Now double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".
Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox:
C:\WINDOWS\tsad.dll
Put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot"
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

When you rebooted into normal mode you show me one more hijack this log to check.

Hmm just one more time to overcome this infection

if you still got the programs you have to download, i don't need to say that you dont have to downloadthem all over again

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsts.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\system32\ststv.*
This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.onelook.com

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsts.dll

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtsts - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsts.dll

    and click FIX CHECKED:

Perculator, I used F8 to boot into Safe Mode. I then clicked on my user name. Screen message said: Loading your user settings but my Desktop did Not show up. I just had a black screen with the words Safe Mode in the four corners and the words WindowsSP2... In the middle top of the black screen.

After several unsuccessful tries using F8, I then tried booting into Safe Mode using msconfig. Again, Safe Mode loaded - I clicked on my user name, (I知 the Admin), but all I got was the black screen as above. My Desktop just won稚 load in Safe Mode.

Then, since my Desktop wouldn稚 show up, I had to do a System Restore, (by clicking 誰O in that popup box that showed up in Safe Mode), to get back into Normal startup mode.

Can you help?

Note: On one F8 try, I clicked 塑es on the gray popup box that shows up in Safe Mode but my Desktop still didn稚 load. Also, Onelook.com is my I.E. startup page.

Thanks,
Rose

I made a new System Restore point before trying to carry out your latest instuctions. So when I couldn't get out of msconfig bootup in safe mode, I used that system restore point. Hopefully, nothing has changed. Rose

My desktop still won稚 load in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, after I clicked on my user name, (message said, 斗oading your settings), I then gave it 30 minutes to load but my Desktop still didn稚 show up - just had the black screen showing the words Safe Mode in the four corners.

I did notice one thing. A user box labeled Administrator is showing up along with my user name. Don稚 understand why that is since I知 the Admin on this pc.

Thanks,
Rose

Ok try doing the fix in normal mode, we'll see how that goes, probably no problem.

about that administrator account.. that's allways there..just a built in account.

You tell me you are the administartor on the computer just want to point out that surfing on the web is most likely not done with an account with administrative rights to prevent unwanted installing things ..
you'd better surf with an account with restricted rights.....just an idea

ok ...good luck with the fix ....
