I have run into a problem that I need assistance with. My computer has become infected with a virus or bug that I can’t figure out how to repair. For the most part my computer seems to be functioning fine other then the ability to update any anti-virus software or view web pages containing such. After using another computer I downloaded and transferred Malwarebytes to the infected computer to run a scan. The scan revealed a couple issues that I allowed the program to correct. Unfortunately this did not fix my problems.

Avast home edition was in use when this started 2 days ago which I have been using for the past few years. I uninstalled this program due to the possibility of it being corrupted and attempted to install MS Security Essentials in hopes that this could resolve my problem. The MSE installation process attempts a connection to install the update but something is preventing the updating process. This is what pops up every time I try to update.

Microsoft Security Essentials – virus and spyware definitions update failed
Microsoft Security Essentials wasn’t able to check for virus and spyware definition updates.
Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet and try again.
Error code: 0x80072efd
Error description: Microsoft Security Essentials couldn’t detect an Internet connection. Check your internet connection and try again.

Besides this I am still unable to access Microsoft, Malwarebytes and many other webpage’s through MS Internet Explorer or Firefox that combat against malware. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply to this matter and my apology for not responding earlier. For some reason I am not getting email notifications. I tried to follow your directions to subscribe to the forum but I keep getting an error when doing so.

Board message: The error returned was: You are already subscribed to this topic or forum. I will keep monitoring this topic through my profile directly to help circumvent future delays.

At this time I haven’t made any changes to my system or run any applications to attempt to resolve my problems. The only thing that I have done since running the applications that are requested to post to this forum is surf the net for research.

Here are some of the issues that I am encountering that I know of.

1. Unusually slow boot-up
2. Web pages dragging to load
3. Some web pages blocked – distributors such as Malwarebytes, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Microsoft
a. Internet Explorer – “IE cannot display the page”.
b. Firefox – displays a blank page (Untitled).
4. Unable to download or update anti-virus or anti-malware software
5. Excessive modem use – this was stopped by using Malwarebytes.
6. System shutdowns at times presents occasional problems.
a. On shutdown
GDI+ Window: Explorer.EXE – Application Error
The instruction at “0x4ec683bd” referenced memory at “0x4ec683bd”.
The memory could not be “written”.

Prior to posting here for help I downloaded Malwarebytes from another pc, installed and ran the program, then allowed it to remove what it found. I then attempted to access malwarebytes.org from the infected pc again the infection still prevented me from accessing their website in IE and Firefox even after the cleanup. Also malwarebytes would not update after installing and after scanning and allowing it to remove issues. I am still unable to update it. I checked my firewall and Internet settings to see if there were any problems associated with my problem that might prevent it from connecting. As far as I can tell everything appears ok.

Since this did not help I uninstalled Avast and attempted to download Microsoft Security Essentials from Microsoft.com. When clicking on the link to download MSE nothing happens. In order for me to download I used another pc and transferred the file for installation. The installation went fine except for the inability to update it. I again checked the firewall and internet settings but found nothing. To update MSE I used another pc and transferred the file and installed, then allowed MSE to conduct a complete scan of the system. There was only one item found the (win32/Renos.KF).

Even after the removal of this Trojan by MSE my system is still experiencing these problems.

Thank you again for your assistance,
Dave

Definite symptoms of a rootkit.

Please run the following program.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks smile.gif

Thank you again mOle for your assistance.

I downloaded combofix and changed the name prior to the download process. After the download completed I was presented with a window:
iexplore.exe – Application Error
The instruction at “0x02941890” referenced memory at “0x02941890”. The memory could not be “written”.

Due to this error I downloaded the program from another computer and transferred via flash drive. I disconnected from the internet, turned off my antivirus software and firewall then run the combofix.

During the install I was prompted with a popup instructing that an active internet connection is required. I turned my firewall back on and enabled my internet connection and proceeded with the install. If this caused a problem please let me know and I’ll rerun combofix.

Here are the results from combofix:

Some spyware but not much.

Are you still unable to update or visit antimalware sites?

Yes, I am able to access Malwarebytes and download the program. I also access Microsoft's site but didn't attempt to download anythig yet. I haven't turned on the MSE to see if it will update yet and will not do untill you give me the ok to do so.

I am noticing in the surch box the curser does a rapid flash about 5-6 times and then restarts the process again instead of a normal blinking. Other then that things seem to be looking better.

Let's wait for the updates.

Let's do a quick search with MBAM and then visit an antimalware site for an ESET online scan.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Then ESET

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Okay, run the updates and then we'll clear out your cache/cookies/temp files

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If you are using Firefox and this has caused page loading problems then please clear your private data. To do this go
to the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data, and then check Cache. Click Clear Private Data Now.

This could also be Clear Recent History or similar

Then close Firefox and then reopen it.

Here is the latest news.

I attempted to startup the pc and after startup I couldn’t connect to the internet.

Restarted the system - startup took a couple minutes and when complete the icon for MSE was missing in the startup tray. I attempted to access it by selecting Start, then MSE but it wouldn’t start. It acted as if the application was missing.

Restarted system again – on startup the screen displayed the system screen (where you select the type of startup) for a few seconds then flashed to the normal startup screen containing my desktop and icons to finish loading.

The startup tray now has the MSE showing, but my wireless won’t connect. I hardwired for a connection, started the MSE and attempted to update. During the update precesses a popup display appeared informing me:

-Microsoft Error Reporting-
Some unexpected errors have happened to software you recently used. You were not asked to send these error reports at the time they occurred.

The reporting error might be because the MSE was performing a startup scan. The MSE just reported the there is a potential threat and asking to remove it: Win32/Renos.KF. I am not sure if I should proceed with removing it with MSE at this time and will wait for your directions to prevent issues with the work already done.

MSE didn't wait for user intervention. It removed the Trojon by it's self.

After the MSE removed the Trojan I did a system restart. I still saw the Microsoft Windows XP screen, and then it flashed to the startup screen and then flashed to the desktop screen. The MSE is now showing in the system tray and I am now able to connect to the internet via wireless at this time.

I will proceed with your previous directions after your confirmation.

ATF-Cleaner used. Checked IE and Firefox browsers and everything seems to be functioning without any problems.
