A laptop with Windows XP Professional SP2 had the recycler virus amongst other things on it. I ran MalwareBytes as well as a Kaspersky Rescue Boot Disk. This cleared up many of the annoying pop ups and internet browser redirects. However the error message that came up when trying to access the C drive led me to google the message and find a Recycler hidden folder and I learnt about the RECYCLER virus. The message was "Windows cannot find RECYCLER/s-7-0-76-100012312-100030475-100024956-4936.com" or something along those lines.
After several attempts to delete this thing manually (which I can list if people need be) I wasn't really sure if I'd gotten rid of the thing as the RECYCLER folder still existed in C:\RECYCLER. I ran ComboFix (before taking an image backup just in case). This has seemed to get rid of the folder.
I just wondered if anyone can tell me a way of conclusively checking this thing has gone? Is ComboFix known for getting rid of Recycler? Is there any more info that I need to give to help diagnose such as ComboFix logs? Is the RECYCLER folder a normal part of windows Recycle Bin as many claim?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post.
