Greetings,

ESET Win32/Mebroot fixer v.1.3 - Copyright © 2009 ESET spol. s r.o. reports the following infection on the system:

MBR rootkit (Win32/Mebroot) was found on your system! Do you want to remove it?

Unfortunately, the ESET EMebRemover.exe program is not able to remove the program (after a system restart).

The estimated timeframe of infection is June-2009.

The suspicious "srenum.sys" service has been removed from the system.

The Windows Recovery Console was installed on the system, and used to execute the "fixmbr" command to repair the startup partition's master boot code. After successful execution of "fixmbr", the MBR rootkit still remains on the system. Subsequent attempts to run the Windows Recovery Console are prevented by a lack of keyboard response while in the Windows Setup shell.

The DeFogger program has been run on the system to disable any CD Emulation Software.

The logging information (DDS.txt) from the DDS Tool is shown below:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    netsvcs
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
    activex
    drivers32
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles

    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

Please download this program to your desktop.
http://noahdfear.net/downloads/profiles.exe
Double click and run it.
Post the log

Afterwards
Open Notepad and copy/paste the code box below into a new text file.
CODE
@echo off
reg query HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\hivelist | findstr /i "helpassistant" >log.txt
log.txt
  • Save the file as regquery.bat by choosing save as *All Files, and save it to your Desktop.
  • Locate "regquery.bat" and double-click on it to run. (It is important that you run the script from the drive where your operating system is installed).
  • It will open a text file, please copy the content in your next reply.

Hi,

thanks for that. smile.gif

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe and save it to your desktop.
Close out all other open programs and windows.
Double click the file to run it and follow any prompts.
If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !

When it completes, a log will open.

Please post the contents of that log.

In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

mbr -f

Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.

Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.

Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !

When it completes, a log will open.

Please post the contents of that log.

**Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).

Hi myrti,

One more feedback item...

The system does have the XP Recovery Console installed on it. However, when I boot off of the XP CD-ROM and let it load, I'm not able to type "R" to get into the command shell to type "fixmbr" because the keyboard is powered off during the later part of the boot-up. The system has to be powered off. I've only been able to make it through the boot-up one time with an operational keyboard at the end of the boot-up steps.

Best Regards!

Hi,

there are a couple of leftovers of the infection left we need to deal with:
Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    CODE
    :reg

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\DomainProfile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
    "3389:TCP" =-

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
    "3389:TCP" =-
    :commands
    [emptytemp]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, when done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
  • Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process.
If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
================================Follow up scan=================================
  • Double click on OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt a This is saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file and post it with your next reply.
You do not need to get into the recovery console currently. The log is fine, the message as you can see it says:
QUOTE
user & kernel MBR OK

So there is no need to run fixmbr again. You probably disabled most of the infection by running fixmbr before getting here, we've only removed some remains. Do you still get detections from your anti virus programs?

regards myrti

File move failed. C:\WINDOWS\temp\$67we.$ scheduled to be moved on reboot.

The output (OTL.Txt) from the subsequent OTL scan is attached for your review.

The two strangely named files under C:\WINDOWS\temp, mentioned in the OldTimer Log above, remain in the same place after a system reboot.

The ESET Win32/Mebroot fixer v.1.3 application still makes the claim: "MBR rootkit (Win32/Mebroot) was found on your system"

However, in general, system performance is improving. You are making definite progress; and for that I'm very grateful.

Hi,
  • Go to Start > Run and type: cmd.exe
  • press Ok.
  • At the command prompt type: mbr.exe -t >"C:\mbr.log"
Note: There is a blanke between mbr.exe and -t.
  • press Enter.
  • A log file named mbr.log will be created and saved to the root of the system drive (usually C:\). The file will not open automatically, you need to go to C:\mbr.log yourself and open it.
  • Copy and paste the results of the mbr.log in your next reply.

Hi myrti,

The system still exhibits some strange behavior with respect to the HelpAssistant account. If the following steps are performed:
  1. Delete the HelpAssistant user account
  2. Delete the HelpAssistant subfolder under the Documents and Settings folder
  3. Uncheck the Allow users to connect remotely to this computer (via Remote Desktop)

After a system restart, the following conditions have automatically been put back into effect:
  1. The HelpAssistant user account is reestablished and reenabled
  2. The HelpAssistant subfolder is recreated under the Document and Settings folder
  3. The Allow users to connect remotely to this computer checkbox is reactivated

Regards,
bwfmt
