I've been unable to install Kaspersky. When I try to run setup.exe, I get a panel stating 'verifying installer' and a count from 0% to 100%, then nothing. When I try to access Kaspersky's website, my browser closes down (both IE and Firefox). I've emailed Kaspersky, who have suggested a variety of solutions:
. Removing OneCare Advisor, which is part of Windows Live Toolbar - done, but made no difference - I used the MS Windows OneCare removal utility.
. Deleting a couple of files called tgctlsr.dll and tgctlsi.dll
. Deleting the contents of the Local Settings/Temp folders, including hidden files - this I did, for all three accounts on my computer
. Deleting the contents of Windows/Downloaded Program Files - I did this
. Running UnHackMe - I did this, following the instructions on the BleepingComputer website, in Safe Mode - both the automatic run and the manual run
. Running Malwarebytes - I was unable to do this - nothing happens when I try to run this, and just as with the Kaspersky site, I can't access the Malwarebyte site - when I try, my browser closes down.
. Running SDfix and SmitFraud - done.

I also followed the instructions on this website - I ran Spywareblaster and Spybot - Search and Destroy - no luck.

I have successfully installed Kaspersky on another computer, using the same disk.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    netsvcs
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
    activex
    drivers32
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Hi. Thanks, Myrti, for getting back to me.

Unfortunately, it seems the nature of my problem includes not being able to see your response! When I click on the link, my browser closes down. Seems this is likely to happen when I access any messages or fields with the aforementioned internet security package that starts with K.

Any ideas?

Thanks again

Ian

Hi,

thanks to OB for pointing me here. smile.gif

Let's bring out the big tools:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Feel free to PM me if the mention of ComboFix closes down your browser as well.

regards myrti

Hi Myrti. Here's my combofix.txt. And yes, I can now actually go to this thread, so progress has been achieved - thanks!

This may mean I can now install my internet security package. However, I'll wait for your say-so before attempting this.

Cheers

btw, did you want me to run OTL? I haven't done this as I only just saw your post today, after I'd run Combofix.

For now I'd like to focus on removing the obvious leftovers. I'll ask you later to run a scan with OTL.

Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

Let me know if you run into any troubles.

Hi,

Please go to C:\qoobox\quarantine and locate the file [4]Submit_<date and time>.zip, where date and time are the date and time when you ran ComboFix.Afterwards please visit this site and follow the instructions for uploading the file.

It seems we missed a couple of files when deleting:
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
File::
c:\windows\system32\e382de09ec0ef394f5d1e7b5eff1ee96.exe
c:\windows\system32\be06d0f5b78268a2aa4956d71e8ec88c.TMP

c:\windows\system32\d7a423387f037b2a7d6f96a8263b401c.TMP

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

After running these instructions let me know if you can install Kaspersky again.

Hi Myrti. I've submitted the [4]-Submit_2010-03-14_08.36.06.zip file. Unfortunately I couldn't work out how to add a link to here so I've given the doc the same topic name as this one. Hope you can find it.

I'll proceed with the rest of your instructions now.

Cheers

Hi Myrti. Yes, I can now install Kaspersky, and have done so. I've included the latest ComboFix.txt anyway, in case you think I have anything else to worry about.

Thanks for all your help!

Ian

Hi Myrti. I've run a full scan with Kaspersky. It picked up something called not-a-virus adware, which I got it to clean up.

Cheers

Ian
