avast shuts off

for the past month or so, my av (avast) has been periodically shut off, by what means is a total mystery. on this pc, i run windows xp home addition. where to start?

You could start by running Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware, to check if your computer is infected:

http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

Uninstall / reinstall Avast and if you haven't upgraded to Avast 5, that might also help.
