Posted 04 March 2010 - 10:53 PM

When the problem first started, I tried several online malware scanners and "a-squared Web Malware Scanner" identified the problem as:
"Name: Adware.Win32.FraudPack"

I have been unable to verify this and many scanners found nothing, including Ad-Aware and AVG Antivirus which I have installed.
Note: I shut off Ad Aware during the scans attached here, because I thought it might be interfering with GMER.

The primary symptoms are:

In Mozilla Firefox 3.5.8 and IE 6 when I click on a link I am often (although not always) redirected to shopping, advertising and directory sites.

Two to four pop-up ad windows within minutes of starting Firefox, despite having them blocked in Firefox.

System bogs down after a few hours of steady use or if it's idle for a 15 minutes or more and I attempt to use it it can be so slow as to require a reboot.

Attempting to scan my system with GMER caused my machine to reboot. I have attached the initial scan which shows some root kit activity.

Thanks, Joe

I can see trojans and a worm in the PC which may prove difficult to remove - as difficult as they were to scan tongue.gif

Please run Combofix and let's see what we can do to start cleaning this machine up.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

There was also an infected file probably from the TDSS rootkit.

The log looks good now, how is the PC performing?

Let's clear out the caches/temp files from the PC

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If you are using Firefox and this has caused page loading problems then please clear your private data. To do this go
to the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data, and then check Cache. Click Clear Private Data Now.

This could also be Clear Recent History or similar

Then close Firefox and then reopen it.

Now the Java

To Clear the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cache, do this:
  • Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Java icon.
    -The Java Control Panel appears.
  • Click "Settings" under Temporary Internet Files.
-The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
  • Click "Delete Files".
-The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
-There are three options on this window to clear the cache.
    • Delete Files
    • View Applications
    • View Applets
  • Click "OK" on Delete Temporary Files window.
-Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
  • Click "OK" on Temporary Files Settings window.
  • Close the Java Control Panel.
You can also view these instructions along with screenshots here.

Let's run MBAM to check for anything else

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

mOle - Machine has been behaving much better since running ComboFix.

No redirects to trash sites, no pop under ads and no mystery lagging! It's so nice just to click on a link instead of having to copy and paste it into a blank tab - phew!

Here's the latest log - more than I expected and all went undetected by AVG.

That looks better. thumbup2.gif

Let's look for infected files and the root cause with ESET

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Hiya mOle,
The computer is running well.
Just to be clear, I did clear the Java and browser cache prior to running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

I repeated it just now and checked the directory afterwards.

These two files are still there along with 13 other files in the numbered subdirectories.

C:\Documents and Settings\Pup Dad\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\33\1cfd7f61-3b00115b multiple threats
C:\Documents and Settings\Pup Dad\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\47\fdf862f-50f0ad28 multiple threats

I could manually delete these two.
Is that cool?

Thx - Joe
