I went away on vacation (where I was struggling with my Mom's computer) and when I came back my McAfee firewall trial had run out. Microsoft firewall was up but it didn't protect me. Microsoft Internet explorer was riddled with porn pop-ups. I attempted to locate/get rid of the porn dialler but Microsoft Internet explorer is still coming up a grey pagew/ a porn address, my desktop icons aren't working to connect me to the internet. AdAware, Spybot, McAfee, and the Kerio Firewall trial I installed for the meantime are all telling me it's clean but it seemed too easy- and things are still not working right. Is it still in there? Are there other problems? Did I
mess something else up trying to get rid of it? Please analyze this and let me know. Thanks!

Hello ginger00 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. If McAfee is expired and not up-to-date then you should either get a new subscription or remove it and install one of these free anti-virus programs:As for the HijackThis log, I do not see any problems at this time. The log is clean. Let's try a different scanner and see what it shows us.

Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Hi ginger00. I don't see any problems in either log. They are both clean. Can you give me the details of exactly what the problem is so I can point you to the correct forum?

Thanks.

Well, here's the deal: Microsoft Internet Explorer started doing its own thing and became a blank page with and address called "niche hits" that would have inundated me with porn pop-ups if the blocker hadn't blocked them. Ad Aware says it quarantined/deleted the problems(this is a few weeks ago so I don't remember what they were) but it has said that before and then the problem returns when I restart my computer, so I don't trust it. I can delete the porn address from the blank explorer page and it will be back next time I click on it, but I don't think the popups are popping up anymore. My cpu usage is most often maxed out and very erratic at all times. It is and has been at 100 percent the entire time I have been typing this and doing nothing else. Internet Explorer doesn't want to end, I have to keep hitting 'end now' repeatedly and often it is just freezing up. I have never had any problems with the computer itself. Since you can't find anything I am wondering if all this is just the aftermath of my problem???

Okay I know you're not supposed to reply to your own posts but everything is not okay. I have two desktop icons, one is for Microsoft Internet Explorer, one is just Internet Explorer. Internet explorer, if I go to my Start menu, takes me nicely to my msn homepage, la de da. Microsoft Internet Explorer however, is still taking me to raunchy sex pop-up land if I disable pop-up blocker. TODAY McAfee tells me I have a potentially unwanted program (no,really?) Adware-ISTBar, file: prompt[1].htm in C:/Documents and Settings... that it cannot clean. I looked in C:/ but I don't see anything...although I'm not sure what I am looking for??? Or if I am doing it right. Well, respond whenever you are able, I'll keep trying. Thanks OT I really appreciate it

Hi ginger00. Ok, let's try this. Delete the desktop link that is bringing you to the porn sites. We know that that is a bad one because the menu shortcut is fine.

Now, download and install the trial version of the ewido security suite. Update the program and then:
  • Click on the Scanner button.
  • Click on the Complete System Scan.
  • If anything is found you will be prompted to clean the first infected file found. Choose Clean and put a checkmark in the checkbox for Perform action on all infections and click the Ok button to continue the scan.
  • When the scan is complete close ewido and reboot the computer normally.
Save the report from ewido and post it back here.

Cheers.

 So I did that, and the bad desktop link has not returned or anything. The scanner found nothing. None of the many scanners I have used have found anything even though last time I wrote you McAfee told me I had Exploit-ANIfile and it couldn't be cleaned. The alert hasn't happened again, even when I scan w/ McAfee. I also installed a2 guard (I read about it elsewhere on BC and decided to try it) It tells me there is a possible trojan in: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe because it is attempting to download and install files from the internet- how do I know it's not just another program downloading updates or something? I didn't delete it or anything. I just don't know what to do anymore. Trojans don't just disappear. Is it able to hide from all these scanners? Should I scan in safe mode(possible?)? I guess until next time I will just keep on scannin', and post again if anything surfaces. Thanks again :flowers: I always appreciate your help.

Hi ginger00. I do not think that it was a trojan. I think that the extra IE link on the desktop was simply placed there by an infected or compromised website.

The WkUFind.exe file is the updater for Microsoft Works and is legitimate. McAfee is simply seeing network activity and doesn't know the difference between legitimate and non-legitimate programs. It's Ok to let WkUFind.exe check and install updates if that is what you want. Otherwise you could disable it and manually check periodically yourself.

You are good to go.

Cheers.

I don't know what all of that was. Thank you for riding in on your white horse Gandalf-style to save my computer! Sorry it was a wild goose chase! My many security/ scanner/ guard systems steered me wrong-and I was scared to delete the link- I didn't know what would happen to my internet connection  DUH! Live and learn I guess. Thanks again! :flowers:
