I have experienced failure in trying to remove a toolbar and (believe to be associated) other nastiness such as advertising and redirecting. The toolbar seems associated with this web address http://yupsearch.com/uninstall.php?ver=66&acc=vonner which offers an uninstall if I enter certain info into fields...yeh right.
I have deleted the windir32.exe file and other files which online literature defined as associated with it.
Even though I am showing hidden files, I cannot find the Trojan Elitebar file that Norton says should be in C:\windows\ETB\NT_HIDE65.DLL

I believe that my PC was infected while son was on AIM.

I have
scanned for infections...nothing
deleted files from registry, host files, reset home page, deleted favorites, and
done lots of other stuff (directed by online advice) in safe mode while enabling system restore yada yada...nothing seems to get rid of this mess.

I am guessing that at the very least, the 2 pokapoka files in the log below need to be eliminated.

Hello,

Download LQfix.exe and place it on your desktop.
Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
This will create a new folder called LQfix on your desktop.
Open the folder and doubleclick ClickThis.bat
Follow the prompts on the screen.
Your system will reboot afterwards.
Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background.

Post a new hijackthislog afterwards

Hi,

Can you tell me if you got an error while clicking ClickThis.bat? If so, what error did you get?
Did you get a prompt afterwards that you have to restart your system? It is important that you tell me this.

I updated my lqfix, so you have to delete the C:\Windows\LQfix- folder

Then download the new version and please disable your antivirus, because I think your antivirus deleted download.exe and/or unzip.exe probably

Try this (AFTER you deleted the LQfix-folder present in your C:\Windows)

Please also read the instructions very carefully and tell me afterwards if you got any errors and/or what the prompts in the dosscreen told you:

Download LQfix.exe and place it on your desktop.
Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
Leave the default settings. If you change them, the fix will fail.
Make sure 'Launch LQfix' is checked. After clicking finish in the install, the fix will start.
Follow the prompts on the screen.
Your system will reboot afterwards.
Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background.

Disabled antivirus.
Followed directions while a live internet connection opened and received:

Close all open programs except this window! [ISP and browser as well? Do I not need to be connected to the internet?]
Please wait…….

A prompt will open soon.

Click yes for restart

Should I at least take off the pokapoka files? Or are those sometimes legitimate?

It seems like BFU.exe wasn't downloaded.

Ok, no problem. I have a version, simple one, that must be run in safe mode. This one doesn't need BFU.exe

* Download LQfix.zip
Unzip it and save it to your desktop, don't use it yet!!

Boot your system in SAFE MODE without networking support.
This is really important, otherwise the fix will fail.
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.
A doswindow will open and close again, this is normal.

Reboot back to normal mode and post a new hijackthislog.

I just reread above post and it seems like you disabled your internetconnection. That explains why the necessary files aren't there.
It says in the screen:

Make sure you have a working internet connection to download BFU.exe
So make connection with the internet and doubleclick ClickThis.bat again
Press any key to continue. . .

Anyway, just follow my other steps and use the other one in safe mode.

FYI…8 files had come with the previous version of LQFix. One was a zipped file called bfu (0KB). Another was an unzip application (164KB).

While your website was down I did some other searching and then deleted a bunch of stuff from the startup routine including the pokapokas but they tend to return. And deleted the R1 and R0 stuff.
My PC was rapidly becoming all but useless and so the deletions seemed to help a lot and began running OK at least for the time being.

Then I ran your most recently sent LGFix in safemode and got the following results…however, I was unable to connect to the internet via dial up with PeoplePC afterwards and had to reinstall the software.
This is the log prior to software reinstall:

Hi, I have no idea what is causing the loss of your People Pc, because LQfix only deletes the files that comes with elitum and nothing else.

What also strange is.. If you ran my fix in safe mode, normally this entry must be gone:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System service66] C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka66.exe

I really don't understand what you all have been trying and how you followed instructions, but in all other cases it works like a charm.

Anyway, let's see what comes back.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Services] lsrv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System service66] C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka66.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Services] lsrv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [unMax] C:\WINDOWS\system32\unmax.exe unmax
O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot and post a new hijackthislog.

I deleted 5 of the 6...O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [unMax] C:\WINDOWS\system32\unmax.exe unmax
was no longer there...

Am I now cured doctor?

I certainly seem to be running quiet smoothly and quickly.

Yes sir, you are clean now.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...xp/iesecxp.mspx

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Happy surfing again! :flowers:
