hello! first time here, hopefully you can help!

i get an error message when i try to manually start windows updates. it says it's turned off and i need to restart my computer. i try that, it doesn't work.

i did a scan overnight, but when i came back this morning the computer was shut down/locked up. i re-started it and i still have the problem, not sure if the scan last night found anything.

I found this on a web site:

"you may want to try this . as some reg values may be missing

open this link
<http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/Services/Windows_Update.htm> . down the page you find title

Registry Settings (.reg)

copy text under it into say a text file and change extension to .reg

run the file ,click yes wait confirmation and restart your computer .
then check and see if my solution works for you"

So I copied and pasted and saved it as a text file, but I can't figure out how ot actually "run the file" after I've saved it as a .reg. I know, I'm clueless.

I went ahead and ran 'hijack this' from trend micro this morning and got about 50 things on the log, but i can't figure out what to do with it--don't want delete stuff and i can't figure out how to copy and paste the log into a message here.

So yeah, i'm pretty clueless. All i really want to do is turn automatic updates back on, but if i can/need to get rid of some malware then that'd be a nice bonus!
