Posted 02 March 2010 - 07:57 PM

Well a few days ago my computer suddenly came down with a case of XP Antivirus 2010. (Seems to be a common problem lately from a quick scan of the forum)

I managed to clean it out on my own, or so I thought. A few days later I had gotten XP Antivirus 2010 again. But this time it brought reinforcements. A spybot run showed the usual things for XP Antivirus 2010 as well as something called Virtumonde, and several registry changes Spybot didn't recognize. Spybot supposedly corrects all but one, but asks to run at my next startup.

I restart and before Spybot even loads up, AV2010 is already up. Avast catches my computer sending spam emails, so I do a virus scan. Finds viruses in active memory, so I restart and have it do a boot-time scan.

Finds no viruses. I'm assuming Avast is also infected now.

So now I have my computer running in safe-mode to prevent any risk of these viruses spreading to my other systems, and have a HijackThis log to show you all. Any help at all will be very appreciated.

Note, this scan was done while in safe mode. I don't know if this makes a difference or not, but just in case, I'll mention it.

Just a small bump since it's been over an hour with no responses and other people are getting help. Hate to multipost though :/

===========

Hello

While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our MRT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.

Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.

We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the MRT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff.

Please be patient. It may take several days to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. I advise checking your topic once a day for responses as the e-mail notification system is unreliable.

Thank you for understanding.

Hi,

Your system is severly infected. Problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show.
Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution.
So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start. Reason I am telling this is because when a system is so terribly infected and we try to clean this up manually, the damage that is already present may interfere with our removal attempts.

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.

After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop.
Then run ResetTeaTimer.exe.
This will only take a few seconds.

Then,

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • In case you already used MBAM previously, please update it before proceeding with the scan. To do this, click the "Update" tab and click the "Check For updates" button.
  • Once the program has loaded and updates were downloaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hopefully, even though I personally can't read it, it's cleaner than it was. What do I do next?

Hi,

QUOTE
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.44
Database version: 3510

I see you didn't update, so First of all, please update MalwareBytes,
  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Sorry about not updating. As I mentioned in my first post, the computer in question is disconnected from the network, and thus the internet. I had to run a fresh install of MalwareBytes from a flash drive and I couldn't find a way to update the definitions. I did find a way though, by copying the definitions from a computer that's already updated. and here are the results of the updated scans.

Removed infected files, and restarted my computer like MalwareBytes told me to. Then ran HijackThis again. Here's the log for that.

Hopefully I did it right this time. On the plus side, I can see just by byte-size that the HijackThis log is smaller than it was. This is good, I hope!

Hi,

Please reboot back to normal mode, because Malwarebytes still have to clean up some leftovers after reboot and that won't work when you reboot to safe mode.
Also, logs from safe mode don't show all info I need either.

So, first of all, reboot back into normal mode again and stay into normal mode.

Then, I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked

Post a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Okay, sorry about the long wait for my reply. I only just got access back to the infected computer. I put my computer back into normal mode, ran MB again, then did a HijackThis log. Here's the log.

Hi,

Since it has been a while...

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: app_dll.dll

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked

Then, Please update malwarebytes because the databaseversion is outdated by now..
  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
