I resolved this issue but I thought I post my troubleshooting steps as I havent seen another similar one on this thread.

So my friend has an Epsom scanner/printer combo. Each time he tries to scan a document, the scanning software either gets stuck or a message appears saying that it is being used by another program.

PC was restarted. Printer was also switch off than on.

The device prints fine.

I also try scanning by opening Word, and inserting picture via scanner. Same issue occurs.

The device also can photocopy stand alone, therefore scanner hardware is fine.

So there is a software device issue.

I first of all performed a primary Hard disk clean up of Temporary files (by opening My Computer, right clicking on C: drive, clicking on properties then selecting Disk Cleanup, making sure checking Temprorary files is checked)

Voila, scanner software now works by simply deleting the temporary files.
