Start up issues

Hi people. Just now i am having probloms with my pc. It boots up into a e logo (emachine) then it goes blank it does not load the vista os just goes blank... It was working earlier but i don't know what to do now. I tried doing the start up restore but it blacks out. I tried to safe boot but no avail...and I tryed booting from my recovery disk but again black.. I'm afraid my HD crapped out in me... Any help would be much appriciated thanks

You went into the BIOS and changed the CD player to be first in the boot order, correct?
