This machine came to me with a horrible mess, popups all over the shop and a solid half-hour with massive amounts of disk activity before it was useable at start-up. First thing I did was bring out the heavies, MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and the latest Spybot S&D. They cleaned out a lot, but MyWebSearch and sometimes Vundo keep reappearing after a boot, and it still takes 15 minutes of super-heavy disk activity to boot in normal mode. RootkitRevealer shows nothing outside the usual SAC* and SAI* registry keys, RootkitRepeal shows two drivers (DUMP_ATAPI.SYS and DUMP_WMILIB.SYS, if I recall correctly) without associated files.

Defogger ran without incident. DDS generated the two attached log files. gmer died with a GPF; attempting to rerun it resulted in a BSOD.

The machine is not attached to the Internet at this point. I will not even turn it on again following the GPF until instructed. Log files and programs are being transferred by USB key, and I have autorun for USB keys disabled on the machine that I am using to write you. When you do get to this post, nothing on the infected machine will have changed; that may save us a little time.

I await your instructions with all patience and no little trepidation.

Hello! smile.gif
My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

In order to see what's going on with your computer I'll ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to resolve your issue. Please also share with me any information about how your computer is reacting and behaving each step of the way as we work through this process.

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the "Run Scan" button.
  • Please copy and paste both logs back here in your next reply.

Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Thank you for responding, Sam. I am very sorry about the long delay in replying; I thought I had set this message to Notify, but it seems that it didn't.

Because this computer has been infected for a while, I bumped the "File creation" on OTL to 90 days from 30; if that gives us too much data, I can always rerun, with 30 days.

As the files are so large, I have attached rather than pasted them.

If it is important, GMER's bugcheck (blue-screen) was 0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0x805b4d4d, 0xaf565af8, 0x00000000).

The logs are actually designed to be posted, not attached. Posting them just makes it much easier to review the information, so please do not attach them unless there is an issue that prevents them from being posted.

I don't see any signs of Vundo, but I do see Limewire running on startup. I don't recommend running Limewire at all, but at the very least don't have it running all the time. I'll include a fix for that below and leave it up to you whether or not you remove the program altogether.

Run OTL.exe
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    CODE

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • You will get a log that shows the results of the fix. Please post it.
  • Then also run and post a new OTL log.

=========================

Please update Malwarebytes and run a full scan.
  • Open Malwarebytes and select the Update tab.
  • Click on the Check for Updates button and allow the program to download the latest updates.
  • Once you have the latest updates, select the Scanner tab.
  • Select "Perform full scan" and click the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Noted.

This computer is currently so very sluggish that I will have to put off the MBAM scan for a little later; it will remain disconnected from the Internet until I'm ready to do that update. Here's the OTL log from the cleanup:

The initial scan with MBAM came up clean, as did a second scan following a reboot, so I believe this one may be clean. I've heard of cases where it required ten reboots before a rootkit reactivated, so I will repeat the reboot / rescan process a few times, but I believe we're now good. Thank you very kindly for your help.

I've never known MyWebSearch to be associated with a rootkit. Doesn't mean there wasn't one there, but I haven't seen any indication of a rootkit. Let me know if everything continues to operate properly and I will post some final steps for you.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

I will do that. I'll have to ask for a spot of patience; this beast is still horribly sluggish to start up, and so it will take a fair amount of spare time to run through the multiple reboots I would like to throw at it.

I did notice this.

382.00 Mb Total Physical Memory | 77.00 Mb Available Physical Memory | 20.00% Memory free

That's not much memory and you would notice a huge improvement in performance if you added some more ram. It's inexpensive and very simple to install. Just something you might want to look into.

Interesting. I hadn't noticed that; it does say it has 512Mb on the front panel, I guess it has 128MB (!) shared memory for the on-board video card. Every day, I hate Intel Extreme Graphics more and more.

I don't think this is malware, but it still takes about fifteen minutes of serious disk activity to come up to useable after power-up, and it also stalled after one mouse-click last night -- wouldn't accept a second, and wouldn't take front-panel shutdown. Both of those are definite memory cramp symptoms also, so I'll boost the memory and see if that helps any.

I think more memory will definitely help. Since it appears that we're not dealing with any active malware infection here are some final steps and recommendations for you.

Follow these steps to remove OTL and some of the other tools we've used.
  • Double-click OTL.exe to run it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

================

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - You should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

    Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from the appropriate tutorial above.

  2. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  3. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  4. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  5. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  6. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  7. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  8. Install Malwarebytes - Malwarebytes has free and paid versions of the program that that can identify and remove malicious software from your computer.

    Download Malwarebytes from here.

  9. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I appreciate all these steps, as they are useful, but I have to point out one thing: MalwareBytes has changed their license agreement. The last time I downloaded from there, the free software license agreement was single-use only; you're allowed to download the free version only to clean up a single infestation. If you want to keep it on your machine as a preventative, at least according to the agreement I read, you must pay for it.

I'm currently suggesting Avast! as a resident free antivirus, but I have also heard good things about Avira. Do you have an opinion about those two? I used to recommend AVG, but they rather blotted their copybook at 8.0; before that, I used to recommend Norton, but after a bunch of computers badly slowed down by it, and two that were completely locked up until all Symantec products were removed, I started automatically removing Norton from every machine I touched.

I think you must be downloading the full version of Malwarebytes instead of the free version. The free version will not provide real time protection or automatic updates, but you run as often as you want and it removes whatever is detected.

I haven't used Avira myself so I can't form an opinion on it. But I am using the free version of Avast on my computers now and I'm very pleased with it.

It could be that I'm misremembering; it could have been a form of the license agreement that was only up for a short while (back in May if I recall correctly). Or it could have been SuperAntiSpyware that had that agreement. In any event, it seems you are correct; the current MalwareBytes license agreement does not seem to include single-use wording.

Just as a side note: with an additional 512Mb of main memory, and the motherboard graphics card significantly knocked back in its demands so that I now have 991Mb available, things do seem to be a lot snappier. MalwareBytes did find MyWebSearch reappearing after a reboot, but only the one registry entry, so I am currently suspecting that this is an issue with Spybot replacing the registry key after MalwareBytes removes it. I have temporarily disabled Spybot's blacklist and whitelist, and will re-instate them after MalwareBytes reports the machine clean.

But with that, I think we're done here. My thanks to you for your patience, sir.
