Hello,

First of all a huge thanks to the folks who work this forum and provide all the great assistance and expertise.

I have had an issue for several weeks with both IE7 and Firefox redirecting to other pages. I have run a number of programs including Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, BitDefender and ESET online scanners, and SUPERAntispyware. I have run most of them multiple times. I am also running McAfee Internet Security 2009 (up to date).

The programs found and supposedly fixed or quarantined various things (I have most of the logs if needed) but the redirects are continuing, and I am also now having other issues. Frequently an instance of svchost.exe will show up in Task Manager as consuming a high percentage of the CPU, and keep it pegged to 100%. Often when this happens I will receive repeated messages from McAfee that it has blocked and removed a Trojan (sorry - I do not have a copy of this msg - I think the trojan name is usually GenericBackDoor-something), and the file name at the end of the path is svchost.exe. (part of the name in the path changes each time.) I can kill the process, but another one is typically spawned fairly quickly.

Also sometimes the PC will just freeze and I have to cold boot.

Following the instructions on the Preparation guide page -
- I have enabled XP Internet Connection Firewall
- I have run DDS and am pasting DDS.txt and attaching Attach.txt as instructed
- I was unable to run DeFogger - it reboots the PC each time I try to run it
- I was also unable to run GMER to completion - it runs for a couple hours then reboots the PC. (I don't know if this is significant, but when GMER was running, the System process would eventually start taking most of the CPU. I don't recall seeing that happen before.)

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Hello! smile.gif
My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

In order to see what's going on with your computer I'll ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to resolve your issue. Please also share with me any information about how your computer is reacting and behaving each step of the way as we work through this process.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Important!
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an Malware Removal Expert, not for private use.
Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Make sure that you save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the help smile.gif ! I downloaded and ran ComboFix successfully. It detected rootkit activity (13 entries - I have the list if needed) and rebooted, then resumed the scan. Log is below. The redirect problem is still reoccurring - I had one happen as soon as I opened this browser window (in Firefox). Have not been on long enough to tell if the svchost.exe or any of the other problems are still present.

Here's the log:

Just a quick update - along with the browser redirect still occurring, the computer is also still freezing and forcing a cold reboot.

(I had high hopes for ComboFix based on its reputation - but looks like it didn't get rid of the alien.gif alien.gif alien.gif yet.)

Copy and paste ALL the following text in the Quote box below into Notepad.
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: CFScript to your desktop.

CODE
Driver::
bwcijxrbstjnkic

Collect::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\azipi.sys
c:\windows\system32\cfxfbnhad4.dll

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{6A3FD6C0-BF13-4A24-9B28-BF4E76336AA0}]

Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program.

Now drag then drop the CFScript file onto ComboFix.exe as seen in the image below.

This will start ComboFix again.
After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Just to make sure I'm doing this correctly, when I save the file as Type: 'All Files' /File name: CFScript, it saves it as CFScript.txt. I can remove the .txt extension manually by renaming. Should I do that before dragging to ComboFix.exe?

Try this instead. Type "Cfscript" with the quotation marks. This will keep the .txt extension from being added.

Hi - that worked (script name in quotes) - thanks.

ComboFix ran and rebooted the PC, but did not generate a log. I don't think it ran to completion this time as it only ran a few minutes before rebooting, and did not generate a log.

I did see the starting scan message, but didn't see exactly where it was after that when it rebooted. I'm pretty certain it did not run through all the stages though, based on how long it took before. Should I try it again?

(note: just to be clear, I'm not certain it was ComboFix that rebooted the PC. I started it, and had stepped away for a few minutes after the scan started, and when I came back it was rebooting. Not sure if that was an intentional reboot by ComboFix, since CF didn't resume when the PC came back up, like it did the first time I ran it.)

There should be a log located at C:\Combofix.txt
Please post that log for me.

Also go ahead with the next step and run GooredFix.

I do not have a log at C:\Combofix.txt.

(there is a Combofix2.txt in C:\Qoobox, which I think is saved/renamed from the 2/28 run, but there is no current version anywhere on C:\. There are other files from the last (3/1) attempt, including a ndis_HDCntrl.old in C:\Qoobox\LastRun.)

GooredFix ran in a couple seconds. Here is the log.

Also - IE is now crashing after running GooredFix. (Haven't had problems with IE before, other than the redirect.)

Please update Malwarebytes and run a full scan.
  • Open Malwarebytes and select the Update tab.
  • Click on the Check for Updates button and allow the program to download the latest updates.
  • Once you have the latest updates, select the Scanner tab.
  • Select "Perform full scan" and click the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

MBAM now will not run. (first time I have seen that happen.) It runs for about 10 sec then reboots the PC. On restart, it says The system has recovered from a serious error.

Also IE will now not start at all. Fortunately FF is still working smile.gif.

Please run Combofix and post the resulting log.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!
