Hello and Welcome to BleepingComputer.com

Please put Hijack This in a permanent folder (such as C:\HJT). This is to ensure that backups are saved and accessible in the event you should need it

Download CleanUp!.
If that doesn’t work, use this link.
don’t use it now

Start Hijack this and put a check at the following lines

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.myspace.com/

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://yahoo.sbc.com/dsl

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://yahoo.sbc.com/dsl

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {702EA91C-1ACF-4772-8078-18F2B2EE1031} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 –u

Now click Fix Checked
And close hijack this

***
Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

Once it's done, press Close, you will now be asked to log off, click No
I want you to restart your computer

i just did as you suggested within the past half hour. so far the pc is acting fine.

i am still having some of the issues that i failed to mention in my original post. those two problems are that when i try to view the folders inside \Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files i cannot see them. when i ran cleanup! just now, i watched it take all of the temporary files out of there. i can do a send to and see the file folders that exist in Temporary Internet Files, but i cannot get them to appear for me directly by clicking on that folder.

also, when i open the task manager, under the User Name tab the only process that gives a name is System Idle Process which shows to be running as a System process. the others are all blank.

my apologies for not putting this all in the original post. but it continues . . .

twice in july my norton antivirus shows that it caught and stopped the MHTMLRedir.Exploit (the log says Automatically deleted). but then right behind those there are logs for Trojan.Alwayup which are logged as Repair failed, Quarantine failed and Access denied.

unfortunately i didn't find this log until just after i ran the first hijack this report that i logged here. i don't know that it would have done me any good to have found it sooner. but since then i have had trouble with the pc locking up or going into hibernation when i am away for some time (when the screen goes dark) and not being able to wake up from that.

that's a lot of me rambling. if i need to repost some of that elsewhere, please just let me know.

thanks again for any help,
cord

Please print out and/or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

***

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK
Do not turn it on till i tell you so

***
About this Exploit thing symantec says

Because this is an exploit only, there are no removal instructions, since there is nothing to remove. This is a detection for the exploit, preventing the execution of malicious content on your computer. By detecting the exploit, it is prevented from running.

The full article you can find *here*

***
Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Run Ewido --- When you run it for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
***
About the Trojan.Alwayup you can do the following

Restart the computer in safe mode
While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

***
Perform a full scan with Norton and let it remove everything it finds
***
Then again Restart the computer in safe mode
While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

***
Next, run Ewido.
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
***
Now Reboot the computer in Windows’ Normal mode again
***
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

***
Now go to
Start
Run

And type
sfc /scannow

mind the empty space after sfc

Window will now check for corrupt files.
Keep your windows cd nearby , because you might be asked for it.

When that’s done please post:
The outcome of the ewido scan
A fresh made HijackThis log
And look at all your problems again and tell me what works again and what doesn’t work like it supposed to work

Good luck
