This is my wife's computer and it's totally hosed. She has pop-ups all over the place. I can't open IE, as it errors out. I wanted to get to the web on the computer, so I installed Firefox which also errors out when it trys to open. I can't shut down the computer - I have to hit the power button. I run scans with Ad Aware and Spybot and both find a lot of things wrong. I remove them, power down, boot back up and scan again, and they find just as many the next time.

So here's my log. I'm out of ideas.

Hello,

This is a badly infected system, so we can't perform this in once.
Also, I see your wife doesn't have an antivirus installed. She really needs one though and I'm pretty sure the antivirus could fix more than half of the problems here.

Because it is so badly infected, I suggest to install Kaspersky.
Download it from here: http://www.kaspersky.com/trials?chapter=146481750
This is a trial version for 30 days. I'll give some tips afterwards what to do when the trial is expired.
If she can't download it to her computer because of the browser that is crashing all the time, download it to another computer, put it on cd or usbstick and transfer it to this computer. Run the installer and reboot after installing.

After reboot, open Kaspersky and check Updates and download the updates.
Then perform a full scan.

When the scan is finished ( can take a while ), reboot once again and post a new hijackthislog, so we can work further from there.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. While I thought she did have anti-virus, apparently the license had expired and did not get renewd. I did install Avast last nite for her and ran a scan. It found a few things, but it didn't seem to be able to delete or quarentine them anyway.

I was also reading some other posts here and downloaded (via my PC) and installed Ewido. That found like 600 things, but it's still pretty hosed up.

I'll try Kasperky and let you guys know.

Appreciate your time!

Aaron

Edit - I have also removed several items via msconfig. I saw another's suggestion to check everything again so it shows up in the HJT log. I'll make sure to do that for the next scan.

Hi Aaron,

If you already have Avast installed, don't install Kaspersky then, because several antivirus cause problems.
About the msconfig, no need to check it again. Just remind me that you had items disabled there. I can take a look at it later without enabling it again, because it can enable malware again also. We'll deal with that in another way afterwards.

Well, maybe post a new hijackthislog now, because some things will be gone by now I suppose after running all those scans.
So we can start from there then.
