I just reformatted my harddrive, and re-installed windows 98 on a gateway caomputer, and when i try to startup normal, it brings up a black screen that says "windows protection error, you need to restart your computer." I can get on in safe mode, but thats all. what should i do?

After you loaded 98 did you load any device drivers? What did you load 98 from? A gateway disk or some other? What do you see when you go into Device Manager? Are there any yellow or red markings on the devices?
