Hi Guys

I'm currently battling a vicious infection right now. The fact that I am able to get on here is quite impressive since my computer has been freezing randomly and forcing me to restart constantly. MalwareBytes and Spybot have been absolutely useless. SpyHunter found a Zlob trojan infection but I can't remove it unless I pay for their software, go figure. Spyware Doctor found a number of infections and I deleted them from the registry but the problem persists. I ran a SmitFraudFix in safemode and deleted the infections and cleaned the registry to no avail.

Here is the SmitFraudFix log:

SmitFraudFix v2.424

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below I will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

And

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Then

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Hi there, thanks for the response,

Is there some kind of antivirus soft pandemic going on? It seems like every second post on this forum deals with a rogue antispyware infection. I'm amazed. Cshaw, who you are also helping, has described the exact same problems I am having.

I should mention that since my last post, I deleted the following entries from my hijackthis log:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

I did this because I read that msmsgs.exe is associated with the zlob trojan. Also, I realized that SpyHunter shows the locations of the infected registry keys in its scan, so I deleted all the zlob infections from the registry, and I also deleted a trojan dropper, and scanned a second time. On the second scan, it picked up a trojan dropper in system volume information, which I also tracked down and deleted. Now the Spyhunter scan says I'm clean save for spyware tracking cookies. However, the freezing persists. Even in safe mode :|
MBAM and Spybot still find no infections....

I will follow your instructions and post the logs in a few minutes!

Thanks
Marco

Unknown processes are never good. Let's see if we can track it down.

Go here and download USEC.at's radix_installer_trial.zip. Then unzip that and click the radixgui.exe to open the scan display.

Then without making any changes click the Check button to start the scan. Once it has completed click the Save Log button and save that to a location you can return to. Then click the "X" to close the Radix scanner.

Attach that log back here for review please (it will be pretty large, so direct posting would be a bit tough).

excl.gif Caution - the Radix scanner has many settings and options, including many that can cause quick and permanent corruption to your operating system. Avoid the temptation to try any other options, scans or settings when using it. excl.gif

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi m0le,

How are the logs looking so far? Anything conclusive? Attached is the combofix log.

Thanks
Marco

There's some trojan activity there and the MBR (Master Boot Record) had been overwritten with malicious code.

Combofix has removed the files and reset the MBR. thumbup2.gif

Reboot the machine and a black screen will ask you if you want to boot into the Recovery Console. Agree to this - this was installed with Combofix and is safe to use.

When you're in the console type this command in the command prompt

fixmbr and press enter.

Exit the console and rerun Combofix and post the log.

I ran the console and typed fixmbr and that went fine, but when i went to run combofix again, the scan was going fine until the computer suddenly restarted. Also, no combofix log was saved in C:\

Okay nevermind. I'm not sure why the scan didn't work the first time, but I tried it again and it went smoothly. Here is the log.

That's worked well. We can move on to an online scan for other remnants

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Hi there m0le,

I'm pleased to announce that ever since i fixed mbr and ran combofix again, my pc seems to be running smoothly. Here is the ESET log. It found a trojan and deleted it.

However, there are a few minor issues:

- Smitfraud set my computer clock to 24 hour time. How do I set it back?

- Also, it seems one of the scans have altered my Internet settings so that nothing saves anymore. Passwords I enter are no longer remembered, even if I click for firefox to remember them. How do I fix this?

- Also, AVG pops up occasionally claiming that a spyware cookie by the name of owner@atdmt[2].txt has been found. I click on move to vault. Yet it still pops up later as being detected again.

Thanks
Marco

Click "Start," then "Control Panel." Next, select "Date, Time, Language and Regional Options."

Click "Regional and Language Options" and go to the "Regional Options" tab and click "Customize." Next, select the "Time" tab and click the arrow next to "Time format."

Select the time format "h:mm:ss tt" to set the 12-hour format that omits displaying zeros in hours with single digits; alternately, select format "hh:mm:ss tt" to display double digits allowing zeros beside single-hour times. When finished, click "Apply" and then "OK."

MozillaZine has the answer. Good FF site.

atdmt is picked up by some antiviruses as it is an aggressive cookie. The problem is it is a cookie picked up on Microsoft sites. There is a fix but if you regularly visit these sites it will come back. AVG might be configured to ignore the cookie but I don't use it so I can't help you do that..

Click start and then run ....Type %temp%
A folder will show up and it will have many temp files in it.

Now you don't see the pesky file your looking for right now,

Click on view > select all and push your delete button.

Now go to tools and then click on folder options. Go to the View tab and go down to the radio button "show hidden files and folders" and select it.

Now you should see a file that says altasdmt or something like that. I want you to highlight that file and delete it also.

Come back to me when you've tried these methods and let me know how you got on. We can then go to the final instructions.
