I ran ComboFix and was prompted to download the latest version. I did so, but it crapped out in the middle of the process. Now when I go to the C:\ComboFix folder the program had originally been located in, the folder has been replaced by a My Computer icon and I can see my hard drives and DVD drive. Basically, I can no longer enter the ComboFix folder, and Windows Explorer has been crashing lately (not sure if that's due to ComboFix or the latest Windows Update). Any suggestions on what I can do to resolve this odd problem?

Try uninstalling it
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK

  • Note: There's a space between Combofix and /

If that doesn't work, use all caps on the word UNINSTALL

Oddly enough, ComboFix doesn't even seem to be on my PC any more, so there's nothing to uninstall. I'd just like to fix this strange folder issue.

Also, the ComboFix directory is visible through the DOS window, just not explorer.

I tried deleting the files so I could remove the folder, but got an "access denied" message.

Try this:

Download and Run OTCleanIt
.
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer to your desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe to start the program.
  • Click the big CleanUp! button.
  • When asked if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. Restart your computer when prompted.
Delete the file after use, if it did not delete itself.
