i clicked on a link to watch a movie online (sorry i don't rememeber the link), a couple of minutes later i received pop ups from 'xp internet security'. my laptop has been running slowly lately and so it froze- i turned it off from the power button.
started up my laptop again and was presented with 3 windows from xp internet security, one of them saying it was scanning my laptop and counting the number of problems found. i tried to go onto internet explorer and was displyed with the message 'Internet explorer alert.visting this site may pose a security threat to your system!'. i typed in google and the same message appeared. besides not being able to use I.E, i also get speech bubble notifications from xp internet security on the bottom right of my screen; the bubble 'advises' me to 'click for an anti-spyware scan'.

Also the xp internet security is not letting my aol spyware protection run.

Hello and welcome to BC forums,
Note: do this to close the rogue window from 'xp internet security'. Repeat as needed.
Use ALT+F4 keys to close those rogue pop-up windows. Press and hold the ALT key & then press F4 key.

The infection has disabled Task Manager & registry tools. This next will restore the defaults to normal.
Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, by Bill Castner, MS-MVP, a self-extracting ZIP archive from
>>> here <<<
  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box will briefly appear and then close.
  • This fix may prove temporary. Active malware may revert these changes at your next startup. You can safely run the utility again.
Step 2
Set Windows to show all files and all folders.
On your Desktop, double click My Computer, from the menu options, select tools, then Folder Options, and then select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.
Step 3
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista or Windows 7, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • IF prompted to Reboot, reply "Yes".
Step 4
Please download & save Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-..._4-10804572.htm or
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe or
http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/mbam.jsp

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 5
Download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Reply with copy of MBAM scan log
