WinXP Home SP2
May have Master Boot virus?
Computer boots but does not find OS. Must enter BIOS upon POST then exit BIOS before it finds XP, otherwise I get black screen as it tries to find OS.
MoBo: ASUS P5GZ-MX with Bios version 3.0.9 (11/30/2006). Have also reset BIOS to default settings.
Computer is also running slow. CPU over 50%
FWIW: Nortons AV, Adaware AE, Malbytes Malware have found nothing. (all updated definitions)

Any assistance would be appreciated. See DDS, Attach, ark
Sincerely,
The Blackwulf

Forgot, also once received error mssg:
Kernel_stack_inpage_error
stop:0X00000077 (0XC000000E,0XC000000E,0X00000000,0X02AB1000)

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    netsvcs
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
    activex
    drivers32
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

the gmer log shows no sign of MBR infection.

Just to be safe please also run:
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract the contents of RootRepeal.zip, to your desktop.
  • Double click on your desktop.
  • Click on the report tab, then click scan
  • Check all seven boxes:
    Drivers
    Files
    Processes
    SSDT
    Stealth Objects
    Hidden Services
    Shadow SSDT
  • Click Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, Click the Save Report button. Save the log as RootRepeal.txt and post it in your next reply.

As well as:
Please download mbr.exe and save it to your root directory, usually C:\ <- (Important!).
  • Go to Start > Run and type: cmd.exe
  • press Ok.
  • At the command prompt type: c:\mbr.exe -t >"C:\mbr.log"
  • press Enter.
  • A "DOS" box will open and quickly disappear. That is normal.
  • A log file named mbr.log will be created and saved to the root of the system drive (usually C:\).
  • Copy and paste the results of the mbr.log in your next reply.

Not sure if I did MBR correctly since I dont understand saving to root directory

Stealth MBR rootkit/Mebroot/Sinowal detector 0.3.7 by Gmer, http://www.gmer.net

device: opened successfully
user: MBR read successfully
kernel: MBR read successfully
user & kernel MBR OK

WINXP seems to run fine to me, its just booting up that is a pain in the keister. Once XP boots, it doesn't seem to functioning in a strange way.

What about this Recovery Console? I dont seem to have it on either HD or CD. Bought comp from Tigerdirect.

Thanks for your efforts.

Hi,

the mbr log is not exactly how i wanted it to see.
please try the following approach: copy mbr.exe onto your desktop.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the code box below into a new text file.
CODE
@echo off
copy "%userprofile%\Desktop\mbr.exe" "C:\mbr.exe"
c:\mbr.exe -t >"C:\mbr.log"
notepad C:\mbr.log
  • Save the file as query.bat by choosing save as *All Files, and save it to your Desktop.
  • Locate "query.bat" and doubleclick to run it.
  • It will open a text file, please copy the content in your next reply.

Hi,

your logs look fine, it doesn't seem like you are infected with a MBR rootkit.

Could you please run a scan with chkdsk next:
1. Run Chkdsk
Running chkdsk may take some time to complete. Please be patient and do not use the computer, press any keys, or try to stop the chkdsk scan once it has started.
  • Right-click the Start button and select Explore
  • Navigate to your C: Drive, then right-click the drive and select Properties
  • In the Properties window that pops-up, click the Tools tab and then click on the button that says Check Now
  • If the User Account Control window pops-up asking for permission to run Check Disk, please click on Continue
  • In the Check Disk Options window that pops-up, place a check-mark in both boxes:
    • Automatically fix file system errors
    • Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
  • Now click on Start.
  • A new window will pop-up saying, Windows can't check the disk while it's in use, click schedule disk check
  • Now shut-down your computer, not restart, and then turn on your computer.
  • When your computer turns on, you will see a blcak screen with white lettering, this is chkdsk running.
  • Let chkdsk run through its 5 Stages. When it is finished, your computer will boot to the desktop.
2. Chkdsk Log
  • Click on Start, then Run.
  • Copy and paste the following bold text in to the Open: box:
      eventvwr.msc /s
  • This will bring up the Event Viewer window
  • In the left panel click on Application
  • The chkdsk log should be the first entry, with a source of Wininit. If it is not the first log:
    • Click on View, and then on Newest First
    • This should place the chkdsk log at the top of the list.
  • Click on the entry once
  • Now right-click on the entry and choose Properties.
  • In the window that pops-up, click on (this will copy the log).
  • Paste the log in a Reply to this topic.

checkdisk performed all 5 stages on booting, however the event log did not list Wininit on this date and time. It only listed the following sources (i doublechecked for newest first, time and dates were correct on list):

gupdate
Winlogon
hpqcx08
GoogleUpdate
Norton Antivirus
hpqddsvc
gupdate

But no Wininit.....?????

FYI: Finally found Recovery Console and installed on HD. Upon restart I got the message:

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll file missing or corrupt

Yet Im still able to get into XP once I enter BIOS (took about 20 attempts, been using this computer the whole time I've been dealing with you by the way, I just shut down/restart about every six days)

FWIW, here's boot.ini

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Hi,

I don't think this is a malware problem. I would suggest you post your problem in the Windows forums of our board, so that one of the experts there can take a look at your PC and check if they find a problem.
