As you've probably encountered before, I somehow got this "searchclick8" that will redirect any Google searches to its own sites. Worse, it downloads trojans and all kinds of nasty stuff in the process. I managed to clean out the trojans with the very helpful Malwarebytes Antimalware program, but it wasn't able to get rid of the searchclick8 (I wonder why?)

I'll be glad to post whatever logs you wish to help me rid myself of this nuisance! I have Windows XP Home edition, btw.

Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Rkill is a small, freeware and portable tool designed to terminate active malware processes allowing you to use other removal tools. Rkill is made by a Microsoft MVP “Lawrence Abrams” and is available in 4 different extensions. An .EXE, .COM, .SCR and a .PIF file.
The reason why Rkill comes in 4 different versions is because some malware will block .EXE files in an attempt to prevent you from running other malware removal tools, so this gets around that problem.

Some infections are more stubborn than others.

You can try to run an ESET Online Scan:

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.

  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.

  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.

Ok, I ran the ATF Cleaner and RKill, which found nothing.

I then ran a Malwarebytes' scan and ESET Online Scan. I'm including the Malwarebytes results, but the ESET scan found nothing and produced nothing for a log.

I re-checked my original problem, and sure enough, after I input a search parameter into Google, whatever result comes up I can mouse over the link and it shows that it'll redirect me to a "searchclick8" location if I click it (which I don't dare). I'm going to insert a screenshot-image link of what I'm talking about, which may help you.

When all scans do not detect any infections, I do not know what the answer is to resolve your problem.

Hello and welcome. Your MBAM is outdated.

Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates,when done
click Scanner tab,select Quick scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.


Now run an SAS scan. If Safe mode is a problem run in Normal but let me know.
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
If you have a problem downloading, installing or getting SAS to run, try downloading and using the SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner instead. Save the randomly named file (i.e. SAS_1710895.COM) to a usb drive or CD and transfer to the infected computer. Then double-click on it to launch and scan. The file is randomly named to help keep malware from blocking the scanner.


EDIT: I would like to see your Hosts File

To view the folder containing your Hosts file, go to Posted Image > Run..., and in the Open box, type: %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\
Click Ok.

The easiest way to access and view the contents is by using Notepad.
  • Double-click on the HOSTS file.
  • A message will appear saying Windows can't open the file or Choose the program you want to open this file.
  • Scroll down the list of programs until you see Notepad.
  • Select it and click OK.
To view the Hosts file in Notepad automatically, go to Posted Image > Run..., and in the Open box, type: notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Click Ok.

Hi. Thanks for the assistance. Sorry, but I thought the user Sashacat was a staff member, which is why I was following her advice.

I"m attaching the new MB scan after I ran it the first time (it found numerous items) and rebooted. I then ran the SAS scan as you directed; when I went to retrieve the log, there wasn't one listed in the Scanner Logs window(?) I clicked "View Log", but still no log presented itself. This program did find four items after it had scanned, but I don't remember what items they were.

I'm including the items listed in the Hosts File at the bottom of this post. I wasn't sure how to copy and paste it in here, as it wouldn't let me copy and paste. I just hand-typed the items listed.

Sometimes this happens with SAS and it comes back after a shut down and reboot. Also it sometimes shows up in the Admin or other user account.

Let's see anther log.. How is it running now after those scans.

I ran the scanner as you requested, but again, it didn't give me a "list of found threats" - probably because it didn't find anything? Both Google and Yahoo searches are good now, and I don't see anything yet that's a problem. It seems to be solved. :thumbsup:

Yes that is the case,if all's good on here then... Now you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been backed up, renamed and saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
