My laptop will not restart after the Microsoft automatic update tries to install Vista SP2 (x64 home premium).
I contacted HP and they had me do a system restore to a prior day. This worked but the next time the automatic update ran, my laptop would not reboot again. The support team told me to backup my data and use my recovery disk to reinstall Vista. Is this my only option? Should I purchase an external hard drive for the backup?

I burned a few DVDs when I got the laptop to make the recovery discs. I suppose doing this will leave me with a new laptop without any of my applications or data.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

You could stop auto updates and selectively HIDE the SP2 update.
Have you seen articles describing SP2 update failures on X64 PCs e.g. one example:

Cryptodan,
I will try to download the file directly after I do a little more research on the issue raised by Aus Smithy about the dual core issue. I have AMD dual core, not sure if it is the same issue as the Intel dual core issue.

Thanks for the advice! I will post back the results.

I am using an Intel Q6600, and I have had no issues with SP2 on Vista.
