You helped me out last time, looking for your magic again!

Wife clicked on link in facebook email on our laptop, virus (or something) strikes, pop-ups galore. Ran Malwarebytes, found koobface virus and quarantined. However, laptop will still not let me update Malwarebytes, connect to bleepingcomputer (sending this message from desktop), or connect to any antivirus website to update my antivirus or antimalware programs. No error messages, just says Page Not Found. I tried getting to McAfee, Norton, Computer Associates, Malwarebytes, etc. with no success.

Please advise, I appreciate your assistance.

Thanking you in advance

Hello let's try this.. ( I may only have an Hour left here tonight)

First run DEFOGGER
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Now Run RKill....

Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.Link 2
Link 3
Link 4
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
You will need to run the application again if rebooting the computer occurs along the way as the malware programs will start again.

Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.44) and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1
Download Link 2
MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hi and thanks for the assistance.

I ran the defogger program, it seemed to run normally with no issues although it did not ask me to reboot as stated.
I then ran the rkill (the MSDOS version worked).
I then reinstalled the Malwarebytes program. It installed but when it tried to update itself, I have the same problem I had previously - it tries to connect and then I get the error:

An error occurred. Please report the following error code to the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware support team.
Error code: 732 (12007,0)

Whatever is on my computer is blocking all anti virus, and anti-malware programs from updating or from me accessing the sites. I could not access any of the sites that you posted the downloadable programs on, I had to copy them to a flash drive from my desktop and then copy to my infected laptop. I can get on the internet though....just not to any site that would prevent virus removal.

Please advise.
Thanks
Paul

Hello we can try a few things//
MBAM 732 error

This routine will confirm that Internet Explorer is set to the Online mode.
Click on START - RUN and Copy/Paste the following into the run line (On Vista you can use the Search line) and click OK

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v GlobalUserOffline /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

OR
1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
2. Restart your computer (very important).
3. Download and run this utility. Mbam clean
4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to).
5. After the computer restarts, install the latest version from here. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent.
Note: If using Free version, ignore the part about putting in your license key and activating.
Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration.
Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray and run a Quick Scan and post that log.

If you cannot use the Internet, you will need access to another computer that has a connection.
From there save mbam-setup.exe to a flash, usb, jump drive or CD. Now transfer it to the infected machine, then install and run the program.
If you cannot transfer to or install on the infected machine, try running the setup (installation) file directly from the flash drive or CD by double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe so it will install on the hard drive.
***
Manually Downloading Updates:
Manually download them from HERE and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

Or Run RKill again then SAS below and then try MBAM again.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
If you have a problem downloading, installing or getting SAS to run, try downloading and using the SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner instead. Save the randomly named file (i.e. SAS_1710895.COM) to a usb drive or CD and transfer to the infected computer. Then double-click on it to launch and scan. The file is randomly named to help keep malware from blocking the scanner.

Thanks for your help.

I followed your instructions regarding the Malwarebytes. It still would not connect to update, giving an error code of 732 (12007,0). The scan found nothing.

I followed your instructions regarding the SuperAntiSpyware program. That program did update and I have pasted the txt file of the log below. The interesting thing was the last three lines identifying a Trojan virus. Please advise,
Thank you, Paul

Hi Paul, that indicates you ran ComboFix,

The only issue is you cannot update MBAM?

I cannot connect to this website nor ther antivirus sites on the Internet through the laptop. Ive tried Norton, McAfee and Computer Associates. None of them will automatically update on the internet. Do they share the same port?

The malware knows their names and is blocking it.
Hi, Try this--open control, internet options, connections tab, lan settings, uncheck the box next to "use proxy...."
Did you try the Manual update?
Try from Safe Mode with Networking?

Good evening

The "Use Proxy server..." was not checked in Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings.

I did try updating the mbam cleaners manually as you suggested with the link provided. It looked like it was the mbam setup wizard and ended quickly. It did not work.

I booted up on Safe Mode with Networking at your suggestion and tried running Malwarebytes. It updated the files. I ran the quick scan. It found 11 infected files all worm.koobface and trojan.qhosts viruses. I rebooted in regular windows mode at Malwarebytes request and opened Malwarebytes again. Checked for updates, it connected, and told me I had the most up to date version. No malware found.

I also ran the SuperAntiSpyware quick again after updating. Found 3 threats and removed them.

Seems good now...but any other suggestions to ensure that viruses are gone or am I just being paranoid?

Thanking you once again!
