I'm trying to fix my friend's computer. He downloaded something nasty and started getting the "your computer might be infected!" popups, and now the browser redirects when trying to go common anti-malware sites. I ran Spybot S&D which identified some stuff, removed it, and made it so I couldn't log in any more (infinite login/logout loop). I did a repair install from the XP CD and I can log in. I tried running avast but I think the virus is messing with it - it keeps complaining that it isn't registered, but the register now button doesn't work.

I cannot run dds.scr - it runs but at the end when it says "save these 2 log files", there are no log files to be saved.

I was able to run GMER in safe mode, but not to completion - the machine shuts down before it gets to the end. Here is the log from GMER (attached)

Thanks in advance for your help.

----------------------------------------------

If DDS won't run please try OTL
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
