Windows Security Alert

Hello

Desparately need some help. When I tried to get onto Google Chrome this morning I got a Windows Security Alert telling my that my computer is infected. and that I should scan my computer as it may be at risk right now. I dont get as far as google chrome, as a security warning box comes up with application cannot be executed. The file chrome.exe is infected, do you want to activate your antivirus software now? This warning box comes up for everything I try to open, including spybot (spybotsd.exe) and my virgin broadband pc guard (rps.exe). If I click yes I want to activate my antivirus software, it takes me to http:\av-protect.com/purchase?r=57.6 which is definately not my virgin pc guard antivirus software.

I also get periodic antivirus software alerts/infiltration alert telling me that my computer is currently under attack and do I want to block this attack, again if I say yes it takes me to av-protect.com. If I do nothing I either get porn sites or a site for viagra

There seems to be 2 threats, from either BankerFox.A or Win32/Nugel.E, it also gives me the port being attacked and from where. The reference numbers change with each warning.

Can anyone help or guide please, I've never encountered anything like this before and I now have visions of having to buy new desktop etc. Will be greatly appreciative of any advice.

Also cannot access anything on internet to download on PC as windows is blocking even if I put in trusted sites. Am at a total loss as what to do.

Just ignore the security alerts as they are fake alerts given by the rogue security program.

Some infections will alter the Proxy settings in Internet Explorer which can affect your ability to browse or download tools required for disinfection. You may also receive Error 732 when trying to update MBAM. If you are experiencing such a problem, check those settings. To do that, please refer to Steps 1-4 under the section Error 732 when trying to update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in this guide.

If still you cannot use the Internet or download any required programs to the infected machine, you are going to need access to another computer (family member, friend, library etc) with an Internet connection. Save mbam-setup.exe to a flash (usb, pen, thumb, jump) drive or CD, transfer it to the infected machine, then install and run the program. If you cannot transfer to or install on the infected machine, try running the setup (installation) file directly from the flash drive or CD by double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe so it will install on the hard drive. If you cannot copy files to your usb drive, make sure its not "Write Protected". Some flash drives have a switch on the side which could have accidentally been moved to write protect.

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • Do not reboot until after scanning with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
  • A log file will be created and saved to the root directory, C:\rkill.log
  • Copy and paste the contents of rkill.log in your next reply.
Note: If you get an alert that Rkill is infected, ignore it. The alert is just a fake warning given by the rogue software which tries to terminate programs that try to remove it. If you see such a warning, leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this sometimes allows you to bypass the malware's attempt to protect itself so that Rkill can perform its routine.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Managed to download software but wont let me run, says its infected.

Any further ideas/advise greatly appreciated.

OK will let me download to desktop, runs a black window which lasts for a millisecond, cant even read the writing, then window disappears with the security box that tells me rundll32.exe is infected.

Any other ideas?

Have exhausted all 4 versions of rkill, none seem to work

Please download Norman TDSS Cleaner and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on Norman_TDSS_Cleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Read the agreement and click Accept.
  • When the program window opens, click Start scan.
  • After the scan has finished, a log file named NFix_date_time (i.e. NFix_2009-06-22_07-08-56.log) will be created on your desktop with the results.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Some infections are difficult to remove completely because of their morphing characteristics which allows the malware to regenerate itself. Sometimes there is hidden piece of malware (i.e. rootkit) which has not been detected by your security tools that protects malicious files and registry keys so they cannot be permanently deleted. Other types of malware can even terminate your security tools by changing the permissions on targeted programs so that they cannot run or complete scans. Disinfection will probably require the use of more powerful tools than we recommend in this forum. Before that can be done you will need you to create and post a DDS log for further investigation.

Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help". If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 7 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Pseudo HJT Report as part of its log.

When you have done that, post your log in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the Malware Response Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. An expert will analyze your log and reply with instructions advising you what to fix. After doing this, we would appreciate if you post a link to your log back here so we know that your getting help from the Malware Response Team.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Response Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your post or make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Response Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another Malware Response Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.
