I need some assistance cleaning up a laptop. It is very sluggish, slow to boot, has way too many processes running in the background, and has a problem with browser popups. I've run Ad-aware and CWShredder and cleaned the quarantine files, but the problems persist. The HJT log is posted below. I'd appreciate any help with deleting unnecessary files, registry items, etc.

Thanks,

Mike

Hello,

I think you are still having an old version of adaware, because with the new version, It can get rid of most...

But first.. go to start > controlpanel > software > add/remove programs and uninstall next if present:

SURFSIDEKICK 3
NAVISEARCH
SEARCHUPGRADER
WINDOWS ADTOOLS
MOSEARCH
PerfectNavbar
Viewpoint (Viewpointmanager)
VBOUNCER (Virtual Bouncer)

Reboot afterwards!! Important.

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

After installing AAW, and before running the program.
Please be sure to update the reference file following the instructions here:
http://www.lavahelp.net/howto/updref/

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the 'Scanning' button.
Under Drives, Folders and Files, select 'Scan within Archives'.
Click 'Click here to select Drives + folders' and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the 'Advanced' button.
Under 'Log-file detail level', select all options.
Click the 'Tweaks' button.

Under 'Scanning Engine', select the following:
'Unload recognized processes during scanning.'
Under 'Cleaning Engine', select the following:
'Let Windows remove files in use after reboot.'
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT to allow it to finish.

Post a new hijackthislog in your next reply so we can deal with the leftovers.

Hi,

Let's deal with the rest manually:

It's better to print out the next instructions or save it in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

* Download and install CCleaner
Do not use it yet.

* Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOWS ADTOOLS <== folder
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RAAGNJCV.EXE

* Still in safe mode Start Ccleaner

Completed all procedures as suggested. Getting error message on boot - trying to find egcomlib.exe. Maybe I need to fix startup processes in MSCONFIG?

New HJT log is posted below.

Thanks.

Hi, only one to check and fix there.

Check and fix next entry in hijackthis:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Instant Access] rundll32.exe EGCOMLIB_1035.dll,InstantAccess

This will also solve the error on boot.

Perform a full scan with an updated Adaware SE and/or Spybot S&D to get rid of the leftovers.
If you don't have those programs yet, you can find the downloadlocations in my sig.

tell me afterwards how things are running. :flowers:

I've taken care of these last items. All appears to be in order. Thanks for all of the assistance.

Glad I could help you.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Happy surfing again! :flowers:
