Am I infected? If so, how do I fix it?

Hi. Everytime I try to do a security sweep on my laptop, it gets half way through it and then my computer shuts down...A friend of mine said I may have a virus called "security tool virus". If this is true, how do I fix it? Thanks for any help you can give.
