Is the Recovery Console installed on the system?

At what point...are you prompted for a password?

You might read the following: How to use CHKDSK in the XP Recovery Console - http://pirules3.14.googlepages.com/recovery_console_chkdsk

Generally speaking...there is no entry required on the password line, just hit Enter to move to the next line.

And...why would you expect your daughter's system...to accept your password?
