Posted 19 February 2010 - 07:32 PM

I click on the outlook.exe file and the program opens momentarily and then crashes!
I have tried to 'run' outlook.exe/safe but the same thing happens... the program opens momentarily and then shuts down!
I have tried to uninstall and re-install Microsoft Office SP2 but I still get the same problem.
I have also removed the outcmd.dat file from the application data in my documents and settings, but there has been no change.
Can someone please help....
Many thanks

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:

I'm sorry, if I am replying twice, but my original reply seems to have gotten lost????
The problem is: When I try to open the outlook express program, it opens, and them immediately it closes!
I have tried to uninstall and re-install Microsoft Office 2000, to remove the outcmd.dat file from a folder in Documents & Settings etc and tried to type outlook express/safe in the 'run' box but the same thing happens. It opens and then closes immediately. I have not done anything else?
I would be most grateful for any help.... I can't find options now, it was here, but it seems to have vanished? I would like a reply by email: email removed Please proceed.
Thanks very much.
Janet
P.S. I see my problem has been moved to the Security / virus, trojan and malware removal. Is this correct? Please let me know by email how I may access this problem. Thanks again.

Hi,

Hijackthis and logs from similar malware diagnostic tools are only supposed to be posted in this section of BleepingCopmuter. However your Problem very probably has nothing to do with malware.

If you like we can check out your PC for malware and remove anything we may find. If you want to get your problem with Outlook fixed, I'd suggest to post again in the Email-forum of BleepingComputer without attaching any kind of logs.

regards myrti

Thanks for your comment... However, since I last sent the logs you requested, I now cannot access the internet from my computer and I am replying via another laptop.
I have since run Kaspersky which seems to be fairly clear?
The machine seems to be getting worse and worse? I don't know what to do?
I don't use Outlook Express for my emails [only Outlook] or I receive them from the web so I don't know if help via email would be appropriate?
I certainly would like to remove any malware/trojans/viruses from my computer! Now, I cannot even refresh my internet connection although I tried as I got a message saying that it cannot renew my IP address?
I wish I knew what was going on? Can you help please?
Many thanks.

Hi,

as far as I know we do not offer help via email. What did you change or undo before the internet stopped working? Do you remember changing anything besides running the Kaspersky scan?

Do you use System Restore and could you restore your system to a time before your problem occurred?

Thanks for your help! Fortuitously I have discovered the problem.
I was about to reformat my C:\ drive in desperation... after I had tried to restore a previous version that had worked... when I opened AdAware it asked me if I would like to download and install the latest version [free]. I did so, and then it updated. From that point on the problem recurred!
I tried to open Microsoft Outlook Express and the Program Window would open only momentarily!
DISASTER. I rely on the calendar here and sync it to my PDA, but now I could not access it on my Desktop Computer!
As soon as I UNINSTALLED AdAware, the program behaved quite well again!
I tried to send Lavasoft an email about this problem because surely I am not the only one using Microsoft Outlook Express but could not locate a facility for contacting them via email with reference to a technical problem. So I sent them an email to their sales department.
You might want to circulate this bug to your fellow 'techies'.
Thanks again for your help and support.
Nabbers.

Hi,

thanks for the feed back! smile.gif I'll make sure to pass it along.
If you want to discuss this with Lavasoft employees, you could try contacting them here: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/

Your Microsoft Windows installation is out of date. Using unpatched Windows systems on the Internet are a security risk to everyone. When there are insecure computers connected to the Internet, malware spreads faster and more extensively, distributed denial-of-service attacks are easier to launch, and spammers have more platforms from which to send e-mail. Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it. After the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your computer. Keeping up-to-date with all these security patches will help prevent malware from reinfecting your machine. If you are not sure how to do this, see How to use Microsoft Update.

For additional information, be sure to read "Windows Xp Service Pack 3 (sp3) Information".

Then go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications.
Note: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use Internet Explorer for it, and allow the ActiveX control that it wants to install.

Please reboot and repeat the update process until there are no more updates to install.
