Hello, I had an incident last night where a friend told me he could install a specific piece of software on my computer, FaceGen Modeller. I admittedly wasn't familiar with the program, and thought he might have his own legit copy/it was free. Turns out he got a cracked version off of somebody's blogspot. Anyways, before I removed the Keygen I scanned it through my AVG scanner (came out clean) and Kaspersky Online Scanner (clean again). I last ran it through virustotal.com and got 12/41 infections, but most of them were simply generic entries or suspicious files (I kept the log if needed).

Through today I ran several scans, Kaspersky Online, AVG, Spybot, Malware Bytes and everything came up clean. I decided I'd post my logs on a support site just in case and I began running into several problems. The most came from GMER, which gave me nothing but trouble and crashing today. It crashed twice, blue screened twice, one time it froze up, wouldn't let me open Task Manager and made it so everytime I clicked the shut down option in the start menu, it would give me the log off menu instead. Then last but not least, after downloading GMER under a randomized name and running it, it ran completely only to freeze again before I could save the log, and then again as I tried to empty out the Recycle Bin.

In trying to figure this out, I realized I might have a rootkit that's allowing the antivirus programs but somehow disrupting GMER (Oddly though, I downloaded Microsoft's Rootkit Revealer and ran it to see if it would work- it did). As for other symptoms, I really have none. Until I began running GMER I would have had no reason for concern- no abnormal processes (45 tasks with Firefox as normal) and the CPU power levels seem normal. The only thing I did notice, and it may not even have been caused by this is that there is an abnormally large space glitch when I try to right click any shortcuts from the Desktop, minus the recycle bin. I'm attaching a photo that will show this more clearly.

Also, if needed I have the link to the Keygen if anyone would care to analyze it. It was hosted on a Rapidshare as a .rar with the program installer + keygen and an Keygen guide text file plus and assurance that it was spyware and virus free, hopefully this is the case.

If anyone assisting me needs a copy of any of the logs I posted I am free to provide them. I'm also going to attempt another GMER scan tomorrow. It seems that it scans every file individually, so the large amount of sound files in some of my games take a ton of time (it literally took 50 minutes to scan the Left 4 Dead folder).

Thanks again for the help!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    netsvcs
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
    activex
    drivers32
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Thanks for responding to my request. I have a bit of an update on symptoms and on the request you asked of me. Last night I saw on Geekstogo that some sites use the OTL log, I thought I might need it and ran it to the specifications listed here using the quickscan. I made attempts to run OTL again today under your specifications with less success. OTL.txt was generated with success, through even after multiple scans I was unable to get a copy of Extras.txt to appear. I then tried the specifications I used yesterday, and still no Extras.txt. I will post my Extras.txt logifle from yesterday, along with my OTL file from today.

I have observed two more potential symptoms of error on my system. The first I noticed when trying to download GMER.zip a day ago. What I realized (and you can see trhough and attactched screenshot) is that all .zip and .rar files (the only types I know of) that I save onto my desktop appear as being the size of 0Kb when I move my mouse over them. This is only the case for new files, as the two .rar files you can see I have on my desktop were present before the incidents I described in the first post, and view quite normally. The only other thing I noticed is that if I open Event Viewer and check under the Security tab, I have no entries.

I must say however that other than what I listed I am able to use any other programs without any error. Firefox runs fine without any redirects or pop-ups, and haven't had any suspicious alerts either. Also, after realizing the potential rootkit may have been blocking rootkit scans, I set about running Rootkit Revealer and RootRepeal without any error. In fact, none of the anti-virus or anti-malware service has given me trouble besides GMER. Yet, there are still issues, and whatever it is I do not want it on my system.

I appreciate the response for my post, I have pleaded my cause to other sites with no response, thanks again.

Hi,

please try running gmer with the section devices being checked. This usually makes it more stable. It must not mean anything if gmer does not complete a scan, it can be very sensible.

If you can not get gmer to complete a scan please run rootrepeal instead:
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract the contents of RootRepeal.zip, to your desktop.
  • Double click on your desktop.
  • Click on the report tab, then click scan
  • Check all seven boxes:
    Drivers
    Files
    Processes
    SSDT
    Stealth Objects
    Hidden Services
    Shadow SSDT
  • Click Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, Click the Save Report button. Save the log as RootRepeal.txt and post it in your next reply.

I tried GMER again, and like the last two times it finished running all the way through, but would completely lock up my computer when I tried to export the logs (the logs didn't include anything marked in red for infected either). It just seems like GMER now has some inherent dislike for my computer This isn't the first time I ran GMER either, but the only time I ran it was back in October using version 1.0.15.15125. Anyway, RootRepeal finished with no problems at all.

Also, just wondering if you had any ideas on the weird graphic errors I was getting on my desktop? Personally, I'm not entirely sure that the Right Click thing was before the whole ordeal, but I assume I would have noticed had I would have seen it before. As for the files appearing as 0kb, I'm clueless on that one.

Hi,

maybe try uninstalling spybot and see if that helps with the "glitch". When you right click and select properties for the rar-archive is the correct size shown?

Uninstalled Spybot with no effect on the glitch. Also, when the files that appear as 0 bytes when I move my mouse over them do appear at their normal size when doing Right Click\Properties. This problem only appears to happen when saving files to the Desktop, any other folders is fine. Also, it seems not all of the files on my Desktop are infected by the weird right click thing. Those objects where any WinRar or AVG options are not present seem to be fine, I'll include a picture to show what I mean.

Hi,

it seems as if one of the icons is oversized and "breaking" the layout of your right click menu. I expected it to be Spybot since the image for it is missing. I was wrong apparently, but you seem to have narrowed it down to two programs. smile.gif

Please try the following to remove the entry from your context menu: Shexview.

Download and extract it to a folder of your choice.

Run the file shexview.exe, a window should open. This window lists all entries in your right click menu. If the entry is present, please right click it and select Disable selected Items. This should then remove the entry from your context menu. Remove either AVG or WinRAR.
Afterwards do a right click on a file and see if the glitch is gone.

Disabled AVG Shell Extension scan and everything seemingly got set right. The right click restored itself back to normal, and any .zip files I save to my desktop now appear full file size when I move my mouse over them. Both problems corrected.

With that solved I have no symptoms that would indicate an infection of any kind. Have any of my logs indicated that something may be awry?

Hi,

I'm happy to hear this. Just to be safe I would like you to run a scan with Eset as well:
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Ran ESET, 0 infected files. I didn't see any option to export a log, but again, it didn't find anything. I have to ask though, the program that the Keygen was used for I uninstalled it, but today when I went back I found the folder still there in my program files. Looking in the folder it just seemed like leftover files from the program (a few things that were clearly for creating textures). I simply moved them to the Recycle Bin and deleted them no problem.

Other than that everything seems to be going perfectly fine. I can't express my thanks enough.

Hi,

many progams will leave behind settings and customization when removed. For example I know some games that will not delete the save games when you uninstall it. So that, should you decide to reinstall, you can pick up where you left.
The same may be true for textures (as you mentioned them) that are used for the uninstaller interface, since you can't delete files that you still need, they are left behind. Anyhow, if they did not resist deletion, I wouldn't worry. smile.gif

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

let me know if you run into any trouble with that.

Updated the Java with no problems. I've had no problems when using anything else on my computer either over the past few days.

Hi

Read those last few lines, in order to keep your pc safe and clean:
Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  1. Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
    • Download OTC from the following mirrors and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  2. If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
  3. Disable and Enable System Restore.
You can find instructions on how to disable and reenable system restore here:
    Windows ME System Restore Guide
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Note: You should only do this once, not on a regular basis!
You will not be able to restore computer to any earlier than today!

Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  1. Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  2. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  3. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  4. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.
