Getting random popunders from google-analytics.com (not to be confusted with google.com/analytics), uppuerup.com, and others. I'll also pretty often get a phony windows security message that dims the webpage I'm viewing and shows an imitation windows vista window (within the broswer) telling me my "browser is run in unsafe mode" and claims windows needs my permission to install some antivirus. Google Chrome will not load any webpages at all (which seems to be pretty common when viruses try to attack chrome).

Other symptoms include the inability to change wallpaper and my speaker icon not appearing in the system tray at startup, despite that I modified the registry value that determines if it is displayed. I can only see it if I got to control planel, uncheck "show in tray", apply, then recheck and apply. Really annoying.

But now, here's the catch. I've ran full scans using Bitdefender Total Security 2009 and MalwareBytes (which wasn't able to contact its own server to update, but the databases from the fresh install were from just a few weeks ago), And they both returned a fair handful of Trojans and rootkits and such, but the problem still persists. And it seems to be affecting all computers on my network. Even my iPod Touch is getting the same popunders and security warnings.

This seems really bizarre to me...are we looking at something more than a typical computer virus? Call me crazy, but is my router infected or something?

I have subscribed to this thread and my emails are pushed, so I should reply fairly quickly to any responses made. Here's my hijack this log for my main PC, if it's even relevant:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer! welcome.gif

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Hi Elle. Thank you for your reply. I am more than happy with your response time, as I have no doubt the forums are swamped with users pulling their hair out over their computer problems, and I greatly appreciate the free services you provide.

Note that during my scans, a process by the image name "System" (User: "SYSTEM") was comsuming 100% of my CPU (or whatever portion wasn't being consumed by the scanner), though my computer is only running a bit slower than usual. This is the first I've seen of this; the symptoms seem to be worsening by the day.

Here is my DDS log: (Attached is Attach.txt)

============= FINISH: 1:41:52.43 ===============

I'll post my GMER as soon as it finishes. It's been going for many many hours now. It found (right at startup) a hidden file in system32/drivers called "ovfsthvbadteilhyw[and a bunch more random letters].sys ( ***hidden*** )", which it highlighted in red text and which I believe is malware-related, and it also has a bunch of registry entries containing that same string of random letters. If you get this before my log is posted, should I act on that?

EDIT: My computer blue-screened 3 times during my GMER scans, each of which took well over 2 hours, but the computer crashed each time before I could get a log. I'll try scanning one last time, but if I have no luck (which I don't think I will after 3 failures), should I try running it in safe mode?

Hello Spironic. I'll be helping you from here.

There's no need for the GMER scan at the moment. I can see enough from the DDS log and what you describe.

Backdoor Threat
I'm sorry to say that your computer is infected with one or more backdoor trojans.

This means that sensitive information could have been stolen. I would advise to change any passwords for any accounts that you have accessed with the infected computer using a clean computer ASAP. If you have used this computer for banking, I would strongly suggest that you report the possible stolen information. Please do not use the computer for any further transactions, or to enter any other information, if at all possible, until it is declared clean.

You may want to read this article on how to handle identity theft.
You may also want to read this article regarding preventing of identity theft.

This computer can still be cleaned, however, I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% safe even after disinfection.

Please read When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall.

I will proceed assuming you wish to disinfect. If you want to do a reinstall, reply back saying so.

Cracks and Keygens Warning
I see evidence of cracks, keygens or pirated software on your computer.

You should know that use of these is considered illegal activity, as it bypasses copyright laws.

Moreover, more often than not, the files associated contain malware. People who create and distribute such items make profits by putting infections into the files. Merely visiting sites that contain these files is a security risk.

Antivirus programs cannot protect you against what you are deliberately running.

I strongly suggest that you remove all files and programs associated with cracks and keygens, in addition to not using them in the future.

The HJT Team are not tolerent of members that continue to be reinfected from use of such programs.

Disable Realtime Protection
Antimalware programs can interfere with ComboFix and other tools we need to run. Please temporarily disable all realtime protections you have enabled. Refer to this page, if you are unsure how.

Download and Run ComboFix
Download Combofix by sUBs from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. If you have already run ComboFix, delete your old copy and download a new one.
Link 1, Link 2, Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator". You will not recieve the prompts below if you are not using Windows XP. ComboFix will check to see if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

  • When the Recovery Console has been installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • When finished, ComboFix will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

After running ComboFix, please try running GMER again.

In your next reply include:
-the ComboFix log
-the GMER scan log

With Regards,
The Panda

Note that after running combofix, the volume tray icon now appears at startup properly, and my wallpaper can be changed, however, Google Chrome is still unable to connect to websites and Firefox and IE are both still getting popunders and redirects.

EDIT: After 4 long hours of scanning, my GMER log is attached. In other news, I discovered that launching Chrome has about a 50% chance of causing my computer to bluescreen and reboot. Very strange.

I anxiously await further instructions. But since this is taking so long, I may take the liberty of running HouseCall while I wait.

EDIT x2: HouseCall and A-Squared were both unable to contact their update servers.

Hello.

There still appears to be an infection.

Please refrain from running other scan between replies, as it may change the directions I have to give you.

Download and Run Kaspersky TDSSKiller
  • Go to Kaspersky and Download TDSSKiller.zip.
  • Extract the contents of TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop.
  • Click Start >> Run then copy and paste the following bold command line into the Run box and click OK.
"%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v
  • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
  • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called TDSSKiller.txt please post this log in your next reply.

It appears that you have leftovers of a Kaspersky installation and you are currently using BitDefender. If this is not true, do not run the script below. Instead, simply click on ComboFix.exe again to run it.

Run ComboFix with CFScript
We will run ComboFix again with a script.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open notepad (Start>Run>"notepad") and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:
    CODE
    SecCenter::
    AV: Kaspersky Internet Security *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {2C4D4BC6-0793-4956-A9F9-E252435469C0}
    FW: Kaspersky Internet Security *disabled* {2C4D4BC6-0793-4956-A9F9-E252435469C0}
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe. (This should be your desktop.)

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt". Post back with that log.

Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

With Regards,
The Panda

TDSSKiller returned all "0 / 0 / 0"s, requested no input and created no log.

Your assumption that Kaspersky has been uninstalled in favor of BitDefender are correct. i ran the script.

Chrome works! My browsers are being much more tame now, but I still seem to be getting popunders from time to time from the same 3 sites (google-analytics.com, upperup.com and results.gugle.com). It probably bears repeating that this issue is influencing all computers on the network, including an iPod Touch (which I would presume to be immune to the vast majority of viruses), so I cant be certain as to where the infection lies. Each computer/device should be connecting to the internet directly through my router, I'm not certain whether it is possible for a virus to attack http requests from other computers on the network..

I do have one other minor issue though that I believe was caused by malware but was not fixed when the malware was removed, and I'm not sure how to fix it. Any Wikipedia article opened with Internet Explorer has an almost-impossible-to-read script font applied to the whole page. It doesn't seem to matter what encoding I select from the right-click menu in IE, the script font remains. This only seems to apply to Wikipedia pages (And IE), but I believe I have a vague recollection of it happening to some other site at one point. If you know of any way to fix this, that would really put the icing on the cake. I personally do not use IE, but some users of this shared computer do.

One last thing, I got a messagebox at the end of my combofix that said:

"Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.

Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now.

[Retry] [More Information] [Cancel]"

Can this be safely ignored?

Here's the log:

Hello.

That sounds better.

The message you got was from when ComboFix replaced a system file. It can be safely ignored. Do tell me though if it appears every boot or just that once.

QUOTE
but I still seem to be getting popunders from time to time from the same 3 sites (google-analytics.com, upperup.com and results.gugle.com). It probably bears repeating that this issue is influencing all computers on the network, including an iPod Touch (which I would presume to be immune to the vast majority of viruses),
Do the pages randomly open, or are you redirected to the page from Google.

From the iPod, the pages still redirect there/open? You are right that malware on iPods is very rare, though not unheard of. This makes me suspect a router hijack. I would try to reset the router.

Update Java to Version 6 Update 18

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 Update 18 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE).
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Run Scan with Kaspersky

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. Please note: Kaspersky requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) be installed before scanning for malware, as ActiveX is no longer being used.)

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Open the Kaspersky WebScanner
    page.
  • Click on the button on the main page.
  • The program will launch and fill in the Information section on the left.
  • Read the "Requirements and Limitations" then press the button.
  • The program will begin downloading the latest program and definition files. It may take a while so please be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the files have been downloaded, click on the ...button.
In the scan settings make sure the following are selected:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
By default the above items should already be checked.
    • Click the button, if you made any changes.
  • Now under the Scan section on the left:

    Select My Computer
  • The program will now start and scan your system. This will run for a while, be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
You can refer to this animation by sundavis if needed.

Please then take a new set of logs from DDS. Include the Attach.txt

With Regards,
The Panda

When you say reset the router, you mean power it down and back up? I just tried that, but I'm still getting those same popunders and (pop-over?) page scripts. Would hitting "Revert to Factory Default Settings", or upgrading the firmware possibly clean it up?

I did as you instructed for the JRE update. It is now up-to-date.

However, when I try to run the WebScanner, I get a popup that reads "Computer does not meet the requirements for Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 launch." and the "accept" button is greyed out on the scanner page.

It would if that is where the infection is. I would do this if it wouldn't cause too much trouble setting it up again. Let's make sure it's not something specific to this machine.

We'll hold off on Kaspersky for now.

In the mean time, please run ComboFix by clicking on it and posting back the log. Take a new GMER scan. Please also run a scan with MalwareBytes and post back the resulting log.

Apologies for the belated response, I was pretty busy over the weekend. I can definitely confirm that whatever is attacking this computer is affecting all devices on the network, as the URLs of the popunders and the style of the scripts all match, even on the iPod. So either it's the router, the modem(?), or a device on the network is somehow intercepting network traffic. I'm no malware expert, but the router sounds most likely to me.

I've restored the router to factory settings and made all the adjustments needed to have it set up as it was before. I haven't seen any problems so far, I'll make an update as I have more time to test.

I have no evidence that anything that was removed previously has returned, so I'll have to decline your request to run 3 scans I've already run and giving you logs you've already seen, as these are time-consuming and quite a hassle to run so many times if it's not absolutely necessary.

I greatly appreciate your support. As of now, I ask no further assistance. I will reply back, likely within the next 24 hours. If the problem persists, I will inform you, and I will run the scans as you requested.

Thank you for your time.

Hello.

I urge you to at least update Java on your machine (as well as update on other machines). This should not require too much time and increases your security. This is up to you of course.

I kindly remind you to re-enable your antivirus protection.

I'll hear back from you later then smile.gif .

I guess you missed that. tongue.gif My Java is updated.

Antivirus and firewall are both re-enabled, but thank you for the reminder, as I could imagine myself forgetting to do that. :]

Great news! It looks like it was indeed the router that was at fault, as popunders and page scripts are gone since I restored the router. My computer is now running (presumably) 100% clean, I see no issues. However..!

I still have a script font on all my wikipedia pages opened in IE, which I just realized also applies to all craigslist pages in IE. This might not be your area of expertise, but if you've seen this before or know of any fixes, that would be great.

Also, it turns out the unrecognized versions of windows files being replaced popup does indeed show up at every startup. How would you recommend getting rid of it?
