Hello all, and no thanks to the creator of Antivirus Soft. mad.gif It showed up Sun. on this, my wife's computor. This computer is a Compaq Presario SR1428OM, XP Home Edition 2002 service pack 2, AMD Athlon 64 processor 3300+, 2.41 ghz, 2GB ram, 181GB hard drive, 166 free space, Internet Explorer 7 with glitches (many tool bars and add ons). Every new program seems to want to automatically add or slip in somebodies toolbar, ,search bar, virus protection, egr valve, oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, and a hard spare tire that won't hold any air. We are now learning and using Firefox. We have Windstream basic DSL service and a Linksys hard wired router with 2 PCs and sometimes a laptop connected. No file sharing other than by CD or USB. We previously used a LINKSYS wireless router which may result in related files showing up in log. Protection on system when virus occurred: AVG 8.5 (needed updates), no firewall unless windows firewall was engaged. Would rarely do scans with Adaware and Spybot S&D. This virus would not let us do anything including browsing, or opening virus protection programs. I was able to clear up some problems by following Grinler"s post : Remove Antivirus Soft ( Uninstall Guide ) from 1/30/2010. I started computer in safe mode with networking as advised in the post, entered config utility and unchecked 2 items in startup or applications with the letters AS or as near the end of their title.I changed the proxy server settings as advised in post. This allowed me to get on the internet. I've been working on this so long, ( 4 days) I may not remember the exact order in which things occurred. I scanned with existing AVG 8.5, Adaware, (which COMPLETED a scan and has not been able to complete one since, found 172 objects, one critical) Spybot S&D and CCleaner. I think this only removed common cookies and spyware etc. not related to Antivirus Soft. I downloaded Malwarebytes and rkill to usb flashdrive via another computer and fed to this computer. I then ran rkill which didn't seem to do anything other than terminate itself if I understand results correctly. I then ran Malwarebytes Free and it's scan picked up 2 files ending in SFTAV.exe. I deleted these. I then updated AVG to version 9.0 . The new AVG 9.0 picked up 2 cases of Trojans which were then deleted. I then took updates for all spyware programs etc. and ran more scans. thumbup2.gif They didn't pick up much, if anything, as I remember. I also upgraded to newer free versions of these programs and performed scans without much if any findings as I remember. Things are back close to normal except adaware will not complete scans because of virus, or new version compatibility or settings. I deleted old version of Adaware, scanned with CCleaner, including registry, disabled virus protection and firewall, downloaded new Adaware and it still chokes at around 2500 items. I think I saw Adaware in the scans at around 2500. Is it detecting itself as spyware? A file that is in the my documents folder that is in question is titled December+2007+Indonesian+email type XLS file and written by Robert Gurley. My wife was informed about 10 days ago by a friend on Facebook that this guy was trying to take over facebook sites. My wife went to the security section of facebook and they blocked this ???file, person, virus, ??? and I dont know if she or facebook saved this file in My Documents, Or if I saved it at some point for her as a suspicious email to deal with later, or if the Starship Enterprise put it there. She doesn't know either. It was created 12 08 07 if computer calender has been right all along and the calender wasn't magically manipulated by a virus. The files creation date is long before the alert 10 days ago. wacko.gif Aside from clearing up any Antivirus Soft residue and Adaware problem I would also like to streamline the startup process and get rid of unneeded programs and tool bars from automatically loading. Would also like to streamline the virus protection, spyware, adware protection. (On my computer) I use AVG free, and Zone Alarm Free firewall and occasionally scan with Adaware Free, Spybot S & D Free and CCleaner Free and will probably be using Malwarebytes Free since being introduced to it by your site a few days ago thumbup.gif . To keep them from running in the background and slowing system down, I only engage Adaware, Spybot and CCleaner for scans. Do any of these, including recently added Malwarebytes, need to run all of the time, or is my practice ok? Be advised : "my practice" refers to the things I do on my computer and hope now to convince my wife to practice on her, (this), computer. Please advise on which combination of these programs are good, and compatable with each other for future use. If any of these questions can't be handled here, please direct me to the proper thread or forum when done. My wife's computer usage involves reading & writing email, surfing web for research, facebook and facebook games, manipulating pictures, ebay shopping. Email programs are: Earthlink email and Windstream Outlook. Sorry to write a book here, just trying to be thorough for aid in diagnosis. Thank you guys for such a helpful site, Fred

Hello, fred1.
My name is aommaster and I will be helping you with your log.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, I would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following below so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Thanks

We need to run RSIT
  1. Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on RSIT.exe.
  3. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  4. Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

NEXT:
We need to run a GMER scan
  1. Download GMER and save to your desktop. Note that the file will be randomly named to prevent active malware from stopping the download.
  2. Close all other open programs as there is a slight chance your computer will crash.
  3. Double click the GMER program ******.exe. Your security programs may detect GMER's driver trying to load. Allow it.
  4. You may see a warning saying "GMER has detected rootkit activity". If so, select NO.
  5. Leaving the settings at default, click Scan.
  6. When the scan is complete, click Save and save the log onto your desktop.

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • Log.txt
  • info.txt
  • gmer.txt

Hi aomaster, Thanks for the quick reply. I'll start downloading the RSIT now. Does it produce different results than DDS, as I already have that program loaded?

Hi again aommaster, I left GMER settings at default, nothing checked or unchecked by me. Everything above C:\ was checked, C:\was checked, ADS was checked, show all unchecked. The drives listed belowC:\ were left unchecked for the default setting. This computer has a Presario_RP(D) drive if that matters. In original post I did not mention that the current printer being used is HP 6310 all in one print scan copy fax. The Canon software that may show up is for a Canon Digital Rebel Camera. Thanks,Fred thumbup2.gif Here are the logs

Hello, fred1.
For future reference, please copy and paste logs into your reply as they make it easier for me to read smile.gif

We need to disable TeaTimer
TeaTimer works by preventing ANY changes to the system. It will attempt to undo any fixes we run, because it blocks these fixes from running.

In order to safeguard your system from problems that can be brought on by a half finished fix, we need to disable TeaTimer. We can reenable it when we're done if you like.
  1. Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  2. If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  3. ClickMode and then on "Advanced Mode"
  4. You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press yes
  5. Click on Tools
  6. Click on Resident
  7. Uncheck the following checkboxes:
    • Resident "SDHelper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker) active.
    • Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection for over-all system settings) active.
  8. Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy

NEXT:

We need to download and run ComboFix (by sUBs)
  1. Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results". For more details, please check this thread
  2. Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
** IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  3. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  4. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  5. Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  6. Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed. Click 'Yes' to continue scanning for malware. Click 'No' to exit
  7. Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  8. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
**A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
**This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
**ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis Log

Please do not send me PM's requesting for help. The forums are there for a reason : )
If I am helping you and do not respond to your thread for 48 hours, please send me a PM

hi aommaster,I shut down tea timer, made sure resident helper was off, adaware off, firewall off, avg disabled. Mouse battery was low so combo fix log did not save to desktop as planed and I had to look for it and may have named it wrong. Rsit or hijack log only produced one file that I know of and I named it log 2 to keep from covering up or confusing with the previous log. Should I keep previous logs or deleat? thanks, fredComboFix 10-02-18.09 - Compaq_Owner 02/19/2010 9:20.1.1 - x86

Hello, fred1.
You can keep the logs for now. We'll remove them once we're done with the fix (I'll give you instructions for that).
We need to run a Panda Active Scan
  1. Please go here to run Panda's ActiveScan
  2. Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  3. Click the big Scan Now button
  4. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  5. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  6. When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  7. When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

NEXT:

Do you still seem to be experiencing any problems?

You also mentioned that you'd like your startup list to be improved (removal of Toolbars, etc.). Would you still like that?

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ActiveScan Report
  • Answers to my questions above

hi aommaster, I am currently doing Panda scan on the other computer we have been addressing. Is Panda supposed to stay connected to the Panda site while scanning. I stepped away to get a plate of food after the active x install and it had started scanning by itself. I never got to click my computer. I only opened the active x. It is scanning but painfully slow. It is at 22% after an hour. I have a lengthy reply to your last entry but it is saved on the other machine and I one finger type very slow so I will send when scan finishes. fred smile.gif

Hi!

Yes, Panda ActiveScan needs to be connected to the internet during the length of the scan. Also, it's not unexpected that it'll take a while to scan, especially if you have a large number of files on your harddrive.

No worries about the reply, I'll wait for the logs to come in before we make any changes anyway smile.gif

I'm relieved. We are now at 23% and climbing. Maybe it will do like a 1969 Plymouth Fury III gas gauge when it gets to 3/4, and zip right on up to full....I hope.hysterical.gif
