I use WIndows XP Home SP2 and have Zonealarm firewall and Avira antivirus installed.

Last week, Avira suddenly began reporting a suspicious file, sryvce.dll. When I was finally able to quarantine it (Avira warning windows kept popping up before I could do anything), it reported this:

Beginning disinfection:
C:\Documents and Settings\[snip]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\C0L4A2LQ\z002102318801r0409J0d000601Xf3499985Yb83a3772Z03f017301[1]
[DETECTION] Is the TR/Dldr.Mufanom.jfq.1 Trojan
[NOTE] The file was moved to '[snip].qua'!
C:\Documents and Settings\[snip]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\M9WS3XVP\z002102318801r0409J0d000601Xf3499985Yb83a3772Z03f017300[1]
[DETECTION] Is the TR/Agent2.cnpy Trojan
[NOTE] The file was moved to '[snip].qua'!

(I removed the username and qua filenames here.)

I should mention that I have IE7 but rarely use it to access the internet (I use Firefox). I'm assuming the IE5 directory is for IE7 temp files? Someone did use IE7 to check their email around the time this happened. Could that be how the virus got in?

I should also mention that I don't have Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed. I was afraid to install it because of things I read on the internet warning it could cause problems and that you needed to be very careful about it. I realize this, combined with using IE, was probably the reason it happened. I'm just hoping to keep the damage to a minimum if possible.

After the virus was (supposedly) removed, Avira did not report any further problems. I also scanned with Spybot and it found nothing.

However, later I started getting alerts from Zonealarm that an svchost.exe application was trying to access the internet. The other svchosts that routinely run don't give alerts, so I knew it was a new file. I just kept deying it access each time.

Then, I started noticing when searching Google that the links would occasionally open onto a different website, www.yellowise.com. So I updated SpyBot again and it found CoolWWWSearch. I chose to "fix the problem". Then I ran current update Malwarebytes and it reported nothing (it still reports nothing when I run it after updating), and SpyBot also says there's nothing there. I also ran CWShreder and it reports nothing, but I read that that program is no longer updated so it's uesless?

I made one other stupid mistake - one of the scannign programs (I can't remember which one) required that I disconnect from the internet and disable my firewall and antivirus. After it was done I turned Avira back on, but forgot to turn Zonealarm back on before reconnecting to the internet. I'm afraid during the few seconds it was connected without a firewall, that svchost may have downloaded something else to my computer. (I don't klnow if that file was removed by Spybot and don't know how to check. I have a zipped CoolWWWSearch in Spybot's Recovery folder.)

I'm not getting any more Zonealarm warnings about scvhost.exe (maybe it disabled Zonelalarm from checking it?) or any other unexpected Zonealarm warnings. (I'm only getting warnings I expect when running programs myself.)

In any event, my Google searches are still occasionally being redirected (now to other websites besides yellowise.com) so I know it's still there.

I hope I've given enough into (and not too much), and that it's possible to fix whatever is wrong. In the meantime, are there any precautionary steps I should take (such as not using the infected computer at all, or at least not using it while connected to the internet)? Should I be worried about any of my private info being stolen?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:

    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Hi,

to my knowledge CWSShredder is no longer updated, that is true, but the infection has not changed and basically died out over the last few years.

You are definitely infected, but it looks like something more recent, probably some type of rogue.

Please run a rootkit scan with gmer once more:
Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

As well as a scan with ComboFix:
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

I ran gmer again. But when I launch ComboFix, a program called Ping.cfxxe tries to access the internet. I denied it, combofix continued, then ping.cfxxe tried to access the internet again. I denied it again, and immediately a program called ComboFix-Download.cfxxe tried to access the internet. I denied that and combofix didn't download Recovery Console so I stopped ComboFix.

Are these programs supposed to be there?

Also, before I ran gmer this time noticed that Windows has somehow been set to hide file extensions and hide hidden files and folders. I've always had file extensions and hidden files set to show and haven't changed any settings on my computer since I began posting here.

One other thing, is it correct that the direction here is to disable active virus scanning and all active security tools then connect the computer to the internet so combofix can download things? Is that safe?

Here is the last GMER log.

Hi,

yes please let ComboFix download the recovery console (ping.cfxxe and ComboFix-Download.cfxxe are part of combofix). If you do not want to connect to the internet with your Anti Virus program active, please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations: (please always run a fresh copy of ComboFix and delete the version you previously downloaded)

Link 1
Link 2
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thank you myrti! Does that mean there's no other malware either? I tried several searches on google and none of them redirected. Is that the best way to see if it's fixed?

EDIT: Sometimes the search results on Google are showing up as redirects with urls like www.google.com?url=something with a long querystring that passes the URL of the search result, the words I searched for, and some other values. One page did that the first time it showed up in the results, and the second time it was a normal direct link to the correct URL. The ones with the redirects show up as a blank page for a second then it goes to the correct page. So far none of them have redirected to a different page I wasn't expecting. I don't remember this ever happening before. Is that a bad sign?

Hi,

ComboFix removed Goored, there is no doubt about that. However it may happen that you are infected with more than one google redirector and that is what I was wondering.

The google "redirect" is from google themself and isn't harmful. Just to be safe, please run another scan with Eset, to check for leftovers:
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.

Here are the results of the ESET scan

C:\Program Files\Unlocker\eBay_shortcuts_1016.exe a variant of Win32/Adware.ADON application deleted - quarantined
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{5CB64572-DB49-4B07-B6B8-56B7BC7C694C}\RP1208\A0337117.exe a variant of Win32/Adware.ADON application deleted - quarantined

eBay_shortcuts_1016.exe isn't related to the problems I was having. Apparently it's an optional installer that comes with Unlocker but I've never run it (I didn't even know it was there).

So the Google query string redirect thing is supposed to happen normally? It seemed strange because it only shows up rarely and only on one result at a time. And on the particular search result I noticed, it only happened the first time that result showed up. In fact I went back in the browser window to that page and the redirect wasn't on the link anymore, even without reloading the page.

Hi,

the hits are in the system restore. We will remove these detections at the very end. For now I would like you to update your software:
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your Adobe Reader is also out of date. Please uninstall it and download the latest version from Adobe: Download
Please untick all proposed toolbars unless you really want them.

let me know if you run into any problems.

Hi,

your logs look clean, how is the PC doing?

the use of www.google.com/url= by google has to do with page ranking and improving search results. You can read a little about it here: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2007/02/g...ect-notice.html

A user recently posted with a way of disabling them, in case you want them gone: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/299178/google-redirect-solved/

However, as stated before, they are not malicious.
