Hello,

I have a very elusive malware. I tried to remove with AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy, AVG and it seems that it copies itself every time. I have not been able to use the laptop. I appreciate any help you can provide.

Here is the HijackThis Log:

Hello, srd.
My name is aommaster and I will be helping you with your log.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, I would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following below so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Thanks

We need to run RSIT
  1. Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on RSIT.exe.
  3. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  4. Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

NEXT:
We need to run a GMER scan
  1. Download GMER and save to your desktop. Note that the file will be randomly named to prevent active malware from stopping the download.
  2. Close all other open programs as there is a slight chance your computer will crash.
  3. Double click the GMER program ******.exe. Your security programs may detect GMER's driver trying to load. Allow it.
  4. You may see a warning saying "GMER has detected rootkit activity". If so, select NO.
  5. Leaving the settings at default, click Scan.
  6. When the scan is complete, click Save and save the log onto your desktop.

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • Log.txt
  • info.txt
  • gmer.txt

Hello aommaster,

I was able to run RSIT, but couldn't run GMER. It scans upto a point and then freezes the computer. I gave it over an hour and made another attempt after hard reboot. Now the computer does not load the OS. It goes to OS load options, goes to blue screen and then automatically tries to reboot again. I am unable to get to the log.txt and info.txt files either.

Any ideas?

Hi!

Have you tried booting into Last Know Good Configuration? If that works, then please post up the RSIT logs only. You don't need to try and run GMER again.

I had also tried "Last known good configuration", but that also got blue screen followed by auto reboot. I got a external drive enclosure and access the RSIT files. I have attached the info.txt and log.txt files.

Hi srd
Thanks for posting your logs. However, it's important that we get your computer to boot up.

This blue screen problem of yours is interesting, I've never seen GMER do that. Are you able to see what the error is? Usually there's an error, and a file associated with that error.

Also, does Safe Mode work?

Also, for future reference, please copy and paste logs into your reply as they make it easier for me to read smile.gif

The blue screen just flashes and goes into reboot, so I cannot read it. Tried safe mode, safe w/ command prompt... nothing works. Is there anything we can do on it as a secondary drive? I have it currently hooked up to a different computer.

Hi srd!

We'll need to get information on what's causing your BSoDs. So, do this:
  1. Try and reboot your computer in normal mode. I expect that your computer will hit a blue screen and then automatically restart
  2. When that occurs, press the F8 key, and you'll get a set of boot options (safe mode, etc.)
  3. There should be an option now called "Disable Automatic Restart". Select that and attempt to boot.
  4. Now, if your computer does hit a blue screen, it will remain there. Please note down the error code, the file causing the problem, etc.

Thanks

Hi srd!

That error appears to be one caused by a faulty driver for plug-n-play devices. Have you installed anything like that recently? Try disconnecting any USB harware you have (except for mouse and keyboard, if those are being used).

Does that fix the problem?

I have not installed anything. When this happened first, I had a USB thumb drive plugged in. I had used it many times before. I tried to put the XP CD in CDROM drive and the OS loaded. It may be a fluke, but I can at least get into it.

Hi srd!

Do you mean that it no longer gets the blue screen? Or do you still get it if the XP CD isn't in the drive?

I no longer get blue screen. I put the XP CD and was able to boot from harddrive. The XP CD is out of the drive. I haven't tried to reboot without XP CD.

Hi srd!

Okay, let's see if we can ensure you no longer get the blue screen (just in case this was a fluke).

Hello, srd.
We need to run ConflictInfo
  1. Please download ConflictInfo by aommaster to your desktop.
  2. Double click ConflictInfo
  3. Press the Run Scan button to start scanning.
  4. It shall produce a ConflictInfo.txt on your desktop.
  5. Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.

NEXT:

We need to check the integrity of system files
  1. Click Start > Run
  2. Type: sfc /scannow
  3. Press Enter
  4. You will see a progress bar but you get no confirmation messages and it just ends. Insert your Windows installation CD when/if requested.

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ConflictInfo.txt
