Uninstall the audio drivers (Sound, Video, & Game Controllers)...then reboot and reinstall the correct audio drivers.

Device Manager may not necessarily reflect the fact that drivers are damaged and need to be removed/replaced.

It should be something obvious..."audio controller" or "AC97" or something similar, indicating audio. Maybe "SigmaTel" something.

One possibility: http://driverscollection.com/?file_id=33756

From the Toshiba site: SigmaTel Audio Sound Driver

Back to Post #3 here.

We are trying to uninstall the current audio drivers...then reinstall the one that I later linked to.

The Toshiba site doesn't allow for a direct link.

Read the info presented...click on XP for O/S, click Sound for type of drivers/files...then download the SigmaTel driver files from the 3 listed.
